APPLE PICKING (Season: July/Aug-Dec)

TIPS FOR PICKING: When picking, an apple’s skin should be shiny, not dull.  A dull apple won’t be crisp and tasty. Also, make sure the apple is firm and free of bruises and punctures.

TIPS FOR STORING: When storing, keep apples at about 32 degrees Fahrenheit.  They won’t stay crisp on the counter top for long.

TIPS FOR PREPARING: Protect cut apples from oxidation by dipping them into a solution of one part citrus juice and three parts water.

HOLE HOT DOUGHNUTS AND FRESH COFFEE | 168 Haywood Rd, Asheville, 28806 | (828) 774-5667

What’s The Deal: Happy National Doughnut day!! There will be no free doughnuts today. Instead, we are celebrating our glorious team! They will be earning holiday pay at time and a half! Let’s give a huge hand (and maybe a nice tip if you’re feeling celebratory) to Joseph, Alex, Neomi and Laurie. We love our doughnuts and coffee, but we know that it’s these people who really create the vibe and the memories. So many customers tell us so. We also want to give a shout out to @justeconomicswnc for their hard work advocating for living wage employment. We feel so passionately that paying our employees above a living wage makes our small business successful and joyful. Our employees experience a strong life/work balance because they don’t have to take on second jobs or excessive hours to afford to live in this beautiful little city. They take that resulting joy and energy with them to work every single day. And we are so grateful. We are also thankful that our customers seem to love these amazing people as much as we do, and keep on coming back to see them! The delicious doughnuts they hand-make to order are really just a sweet bonus! The good life is all about these kinds of meaningful connections we have with other people. We love this community so much. Thank you.

Black Mountain Summer Adventures Camp … This day camp is for rising 1st—6th graders. Since 2011 we have been spending our summer days park hopping, hiking, creak walking, waterfall  nding, swimming, journaling, playing games, doing art projects, exploring theater arts, letterboxing, and much, much more! Each group has a strict limit to allow for good supervision and great experiences. Registration will open March 27.

Sports & Adventures Camp … This fantastic opportunity allows day campers a chance to participate in tennis, soccer, or basketball adventures in the morning and other adventures in the afternoon. Full day signups will start March 27. Sports-only half day camps will also be available.

Youth Swim League … Our recreational swim league has grown incredibly popular, with over 100 par cipants last year! This is a great introduc on to swim teams and meets, and par cipants develop swimming skills as well as self con dence. Children must be able to swim at least one length of the pool to join. Practice will start in May, with practice options throughout the week. A regional meet will be held at the end of the season in late July. For ages 6—17.

ABYSA FUNdamentals Soccer Camp is a great way for your child to spend a week having fun while playing the world’s most popular sport!  Each day, campers work on their skills, play games, and swim at the pool–while enjoying the other campers and the staff.  We offer a games-centered teaching approach that enriches players’ passion for soccer while teaching proper soccer techniques for future soccer success.  Throughout the week the will work on various techniques or skills such as dribbling, passing, receiving, shielding, and shooting. … http://www.abysa.org/Default.aspx?tabid=946857

HFC Academy Camp (9U – 10U). HFC offers camps during the summer for rising 9U & 10U players who will be participating in the HFC Academy Program. This camp is staffed by the HFC Academy Directors and members of the HFC Staff, providing the players with a great opportunity to get acclimated to the demands of the program, learn new skills, and have fun playing soccer. The majority of the camp is held on the soccer field, but each afternoon the kids have an opportunity to cool off at the pool. … http://www.abysa.org/Default.aspx?tabid=950827

Competitive Summer Programming. We are excited to announce our Competitive Summer Camp lineup. Elite residential camps designed to serve our HFC Competitive (Classic) level players are extremely expensive, often costing as much for one week as an entire season of classic soccer, making them inaccessible for many of our families. High level local camps are few and far between and one of the biggest challenges is finding a camp where both the level of coaching AND the level of players participating in camp will provide the right level of challenge for our players.

Mentoring on Mountain Bikes. The Asheville Summer Program offers recurring, all-girl mountain bike riding sessions, Tuesday nights at Bent Creek Community Park in the Pisgah National Forest.  Open to riders of all abilities, the main focus of each session is having fun!  The program creates a positive environment for girls to learn riding skills and gain confidence through the sport of mountain biking.  Using both trail riding and specific games both on and off the bike, the girls practice proper riding technique, eat snacks, and make new friends, all on Asheville’s go-to mountain bike trails. Girls and mentors (we mentor, we don’t coach) meet once a week, every Tuesday over the course of 8 weeks during the summer.  The goal is to get girls outside, out on trails, and out with other girls to reinforce common bonds and build confidence, all while progressively building mountain bike skills throughout the summer.

Ages 6-14yrs

July 9th-13th & 23rd-27th … Run Wild Day Camp (6-12yrs) … This is our introductory camp, filled with more fun, adventure, and learning about the natural world than you thought was possible in a week.  Your children will come home each afternoon both beaming and tired from the days journey of discovery.

June 25th-29th … Hearth-Fire (10-14yrs) … Join us around the central fire as we honor this ancient tradition by engaging with the fire directly—using it as a tool to create beautiful crafts, cook tasty foods, and revel in the simple joys of singing and telling stories around the fire.

July 2nd-6th … Forest Ninja (8-12yrs) … Move quietly across the landscape without being seen or perceived. Observe without being observed. Quiet the mind so you may hear clearly.  Sharpen your skills and maintain your safety and the safety of those around you. Read clearly the signs of the forest and respond naturally.

July 30th-Aug 3rd … Fundamental Four: Survival Skills Camp (10-14yrs) …  Shelter, Water, Fire, Food – Campers will explore these specific skills as they pertain to both survival and general woodland proficiency. We will create a warm, dry group shelter using materials gathered from the forest.  We will discuss and practice methods of finding and purifying water(it’s not an emergency so we’ll stick to drinking what we know is safe).  We’ll work with a variety of fire starting materials and tools, both primitive and modern, as well as fire safety and maintenance.  We will explore the possibilities of wild foods and what we might do to secure food in the wilderness.

We are a NC licensed Family Child Care Home that focuses on preschool & school aged care. Every week during the summer, we pick a local destination to learn about. We read, discuss, look at pictures, and write about the destination. Then on Friday’s we head out on a “Destination Trip”. Previous destination trips have been Lake Tomahawk, Chimney Rock, Biltmore House, Lake Lure, DuPont Forest, Andrews Geyser, just to name a few. These trips are made developmentally appropriate for everyone. Along with focus on our destination of the week, we also throw in a ton of FUN. There will be weekly movies at Biltmore Grande, swimming at Owen Pool, arts, crafts, games and gardening. We also, as a group, pick volunteer work that benefits the local community. We learn about the importance of kindness, we learn about recycling & reusing, we practice manners; we practice safety, we LEARN, all while having fun. Every child is served a healthy, nutritious breakfast, lunch and snack.

We have had campers as young as 5. Our camp director Kevin Lee Shelton makes the determination if a skater is ready for camp. As far as maximum age there isn’t any.”
