HALLOWEEN – POPULAR NEIGHBORHOODS FOR TRICK OR TREATING

POPULAR TRICK OR TREATING NEIGHBORHOODS IN THE ASHEVILLE AREA

Surprisingly, many neighborhoods in the Asheville area don’t participate in Halloween trick or treating … either the homes are too far apart, too wooded, have no sidewalks, or are just too traveled by cars to make parents comfortable taking their children out. If you live in one of those neighborhoods, what’s a family to do? Thankfully, there are several options! Our events calendar is full of trunk/trick or treat events at many of our local churches, at the malls, fire stations, car lots, or with businesses along our downtown main streets …

(CHECK THEM ALL OUT AT THE PINNED POST ON OUR FACEBOOK PAGE).

BUT, if you’re searching for the traditional neighborhood experience, we’ve put together a listing of some of the more popular walkable neighborhoods in our area!

BUT, FIRST! Some tips for safe trick or treating from the Asheville Police Department …

Tip #1: Avoid having children wear their names outwardly on clothing or jewelry. This may allow for a stranger to call them by name and appear to know them.

Tip #2: An adult should always examine Halloween treats before children eat them. Never eat pen or unwrapped Halloween foods.

Tip #3: Always walk on sidewalks or paths. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to the left as possible. Children should walk on direct routes with the fewest street crossings.

Tip #4: When driving, take extra time to look for kids at intersections, on medians, and on curbs.

Tip #5: Drive slowly, anticipate heavy pedestrian traffic and turn your headlights on earlier in the day to spot children from greater distances.

Tip #6: Wear costumes that are bright, reflective, and flame retardant. Use flashlights for increased visibility.

Tip #7: Keep inside/outside lights on during trick-or-treat hours. Avoid placing lit candles and jack-o-lanters on doorsteps and walkways where costumes could brush against them and cause burns or fire.

RECOMMENDED NEIGHBORHOODS FOR TRICK OR TREATING IN THE ASHEVILLE AND SURROUNDING AREAS

📌 REMINDER … please park your cars and walk your children around the neighborhood you choose to visit. The brightness from headlights, and the stream of traffic that cars create on subdivision streets, can cause hazardous conditions for the trick or treaters.

ASHEVILLE

Beverly Hills … located in East Asheville … this neighborhood is built in and around the Asheville Municipal Golf Course, and the neighborhood has lots of children and lots of spirit! The festivities center around Kingsgate Road in the center of the neighborhood.

Biltmore Park … located in South Asheville … The streets are mostly blocked to traffic, so park in the YMCA parking lots in the back. Some streets can seem dark, so bring glow sticks to be seen, and a flash light to see by.

Brucemont Circle … located in West Asheville … described as “Vermont Avenue Light”. Lots of spirit, lots of candy, and a great time for all.

Estelle Park off Johnston Blvd … located in West Asheville … lots of families and a lot of fun for Halloween

Kenilworth … located in Central Asheville … the streets are not blocked to traffic, but there are sidewalks. It is recommended to start at the corner of Kenilworth Rd and Chiles, and then walk up and down Kenilworth Road.

Jocelyn & Kimberly Avenue … located in North Asheville near the Grove Park Inn … these streets are very popular and the crowds will be big, but it’s safe and walkable with sidewalks.

Malvern Hills … located in West Asheville … a great neighborhood for trick or treating because of the wide streets and sidewalks. Malvern Hills is a really nice, low key, and sweet area to trick or treat in.

Historic Montford District … located in Central Asheville … This neighborhood has a lot of Halloween spirit, and is a fun safe place to trick or treat, as security is provided by the Montford Neighborhood Association. The houses are typically decked out for the holiday, and there are tons of families on the sidewalks.

Oak Forest … located in South Asheville … This neighborhood has a lot of Halloween spirit, and is a fun safe place to trick or treat. The houses are relatively close together.

Stonybrook (aka Knoll Ridge Drive) … located in North Asheville/Weaverville border by Stony Knob Cafe … 150 houses on multiple streets, with one entrance and exit for the neighborhood. Lots of Halloween spirit that draws in hundreds of trick or treaters every year.

Vermont Avenue … located in West Asheville … the streets can get packed, but the earlier you go, the more small kid-friendly it is. The whole street shuts down with barricades up to block traffic at 5:30pm, and almost every house participates. It can get very crowded with long lines for candy, but it is a really fun place to see and be seen on Halloween. You can donate to the cause by dropping candy off.

OTHER RECOMMENDED NEIGHBORHOODS

ARDEN

Ashley Woods … Ashley Woods is a neighborhood located south of Asheville, North Carolina in the town of Arden. The homes are close together which makes for a popular spot for trick or treating

.

BLACK MOUNTAIN

Church Street Neighborhood … hugely popular, and tons of fun. The street turns itself into a Halloween Festival with lots of trick or treaters all dressed up and the residents houses decked out for the holiday!

BREVARD

Maple Street and Park Avenue … These two streets are extremely popular with trick or treaters, and will be very very busy. Maple is busiest. Park avenue neighborhood is slightly less busy. Both are great. They are close to each other but not connected. It’s possible to do both, but you will have to walk it, as the streets are closed to traffic and you’ll have to park. Help donate to the cause with candy, if you can, to keep the party going. Once the candy is gone, the lights go out. Go early! They typically start at 5pm sharp, and can go through candy FAST.

Franklin Street

.

ENKA/CANDLER

Biltmore Lake … It’s a little more low key than some events, but a super popular neighborhood for trick or treating. They close the roads down and also have police patrolling, and the Enka Fire Department will sometimes brings their fire truck to show. Wear comfortable shoes because it is a lot of walking, a big bag because it is a lot of candy, a flashlight because their street lamps are not all that bright, and bring a camera because it’ll be super cute. If you go in the main entrance go left at the traffic circle thing, so that you’re in the main section of the neighborhood, too. The houses are closer together there.

Enka Village … located next to Biltmore Lake in Enka/Candler … the houses are close together and there are a lot of children in the neighborhood so its a fun, active neighborhood for Halloween trick or treating. It’s busy, but nice and not overwhelming.

Woodside Hills … the neighborhood is basically closed off to through traffic, making for a fun and safe neighborhood for trick or treating.

FAIRVIEW

Brush Creek Farms

FLAT ROCK

Highland Lake Village … Lots of houses close together and most homes participate in trick or treating.

FLETCHER

Livingston Farms

Riverstone … relatively flat, and the houses are close together. With 553 houses, it can get really busy when non-residents are driving from house to house. It is best if you can park, walk a street or two with your kids then move your car to the next section. The least amount of driving you do within the neighborhood during Trick or Treat time is safest for everyone! They will sometimes have food trucks serving dinner for purchase, located on South River Rd Rugby Road Entrance. Get there at around 5 to be able to park to walk around. It can become very crowded later.

South Chase

HENDERSONVILLE

3rd, 4th, & 5th Avenues near Downtown … Very family friendly and walkable. Find a place to park and have a big candy bag ready!

Cambridge Drive — located next to East High School. They’re having a “Witches of Cambridge” themed Halloween Trick or Treat experience this year (2022). Pop by and enjoy the festivities!

Druid Hills

Crooked Creek … off of Kanuga … Nice sized community with a lot of great “not so scary” decorations.

Heatherwood

LEICESTER

Mount Carmel Subdivision … next to Erwin High School … residents have asked that you please park your car and walk your kids around the neighborhood. The brightness from the headlights, and the traffic from the cars, can create hazardous conditions for the trick or treaters

WAYNESVILLE

Auburn Park … nearby downtown, and very festive and popular with trick or treaters. They block the entire neighborhood off with security to keep everyone safe.

Smathers Street

WEAVERVILLE

Downtown off of Main

College, Central, Church, and Alabama … are also preferred streets. It will be crowded, but fun.
