FREE HEALTHY MEALS FOR KIDS FINDER … Parents who need food assistance for their children can text FOODNC to 877-877 to locate nearby free meal sites. The texting service is also available in Spanish by texting COMIDA to 877-877. Additionally, No Kid Hungry NC has created a map of local school sites, community organizations and food assistance programs across North Carolina where families can access food. ASHEVILLE CITY SCHOOLS … Please know that our school nutrition, transportation and maintenance departments have already developed a detailed plan about food distribution sites. BUNCOMBE COUNTY SCHOOLS … Buncombe County Schools transitioned to their traditional summer meals program serving children in Buncombe County, beginning on June 4th. These meals are provided at no cost, and any child under 18 may receive them.

⬇️ HOW IT WILL WORK THIS SUMMER …

👉 This summer, they will have locations for families to pick up meals curbside at a school or pick up meals at a predetermined location in the community, as they will no longer use yellow buses for meal delivery, so please look for the Buncombe County Schools logo on your meal delivery vehicle.

👉 Breakfast and lunch will be combined. For example, you’ll get lunch for the day and breakfast for the following morning at one stop.

👉 Your Friday meal pick-up will include three lunches and three breakfasts to enjoy over the weekend.

BLACK MOUNTAIN SCHOOLS … Breakfast is 7:30am-8:30am and Lunch is 11:30am-1:30pm at Black Mountain Primary School and Owen High School.

HAYWOOD COUNTY SCHOOLS … Announced April 1st: “Due to changes in staffing schedules, meals from Haywood County Schools will now be distributed Monday through Thursday until further notice, including bus routes and at school distribution sites (those are open 11am-1pm). Meals on Thursdays will include two breakfasts and two lunches.” Mon-Wed, Meals will include a breakfast and a lunch. You may pick-up these items in a drive thru fashion only. Children do not have to be present to receive a meal. Pick-up areas will be clearly marked at each school. If your school is not a food distribution site, feel free to go to any of the schools named. You may pick-up meals for any child ages 1-18 at a pick-up area at each of the following schools.

HENDERSON COUNTY SCHOOLS … Starting Tuesday March 17th, takeout meals will be available at no cost to children aged 2 years in 12 school centers. Monday to Friday 11 a.m. to 1 p. m., students can collect meals outside school tickets at the following sites:

Starting Thursday, March 19, the Meals On the Bus is expanding to TWO routes and EIGHT stops, and will be providing breakfast AND lunch meals to better serve our students during the current school closure. Two yellow school buses will stop on weekdays at the following neighborhoods, providing meals to children ages 2-18 at no cost

Families who lack transportation for their children to access these meals must communicate with their child’s school so that HCPS staff can deliver meals to their children at home.

MCDOWELL COUNTY SCHOOLS … Starting March 16th, all eight MCS elementary schools will be open for students to pick up lunch from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM Monday through Friday. Regardless of grade level, go to the nearest elementary school to pick up meals for students. If you can not get to a site, please call your school for assistance.

BRING A CONTAINER (as big as you want), and we will fill it up in front of our doors. This isn’t a hot lunch – more like an already prepared food (cooked, but cold) grocery run for you to take back and share with your family, friends. ALL are welcome! Here’s what to expect: Show up with your container(s). We will have a menu posted at the door of the Cafe. A companion will take your order and your container inside to fill it with the food you’ve chosen. You won’t be able to stay and eat there (no gatherings and all) but order as much as you need to get you through and even share with those where you are headed. Pots, pans, tupperware, bags, whatever container you have will do! We will do this until we can join together safely around table again. We’ll be running the pantry a little different to protect our volunteers and shoppers too. We’ll be hosting a “drive-through” pantry. BOUNTY & SOUL (Black Mountain) … In replacement of their normal food markets, Bounty & Soul will be hosting drive thru pick up sites in Black Mountain on Tuesdays and Fridays. They will be sharing a pre-made box of healthy, nourishing foods and recipes at no cost to you, and with no eligibility requirements. SUMMER FOOD PROGRAMS

Summer is the hungriest time of the year. Many kids who rely on school meals struggle to get enough to eat during the summer months. Free summer meal programs – at schools and community centers – are the answer.

WEEKDAYS

All across the country, schools and community groups run summer meals sites where kids can eat breakfast and lunch for free. Students may not be in school during the summer months, but they still need healthy and consistent meals! For a variety of reasons, the reality is that many WNC kids are not always getting the meals they require outside of their school’s care and a hungry child cannot thrive. No Kid Hungry helps local organizations launch and operate these sites, and they also help fund needed equipment like mobile meals trucks.

But neighborhood meals sites aren’t much good if families don’t know about them. That’s why No Kid Hungry runs a summer meals texting service. Parents, grandparents and caregivers can text ‘FOOD’ to 877-877 to find free summer meals sites in their neighborhoods. We’ve rounded up our local locations, below. NO I.D. OR REGISTRATION REQUIRED, so whether you’re close to out, or traveling, a nutritious meal is close by.

BUNCOMBE COUNTY SCHOOLS, ASHEVILLE CITY SCHOOLS & YMCA of WNC

Volunteers with the Buncombe County Schools, Asheville City Schools and the YMCA of WNC summer meals service have teamed up, and are helping to meet this need by bringing meals to the area children who need them. The purpose of the summer feeding program is to fill the gap in between school sessions where all children can thrive and succeed. “Hunger should not be the obstacle that inhibits their growth as individuals in anyway during their formative years.” Buncombe County Schools in particular aims to offer a variety of activities at their different sites to go along with the meals at no charge to create a day camp atmosphere.

Furloughed Federal Employees – MEALS & DEALS

To show support for those Federal employees that are out of work or working without pay during the government shutdown, many local businesses are reaching out with free meals or services. We’ve rounded them all up in one spot, below. This is an ever changing list, which is likely to grow the longer the shutdown occurs. BOUNTY & SOUL (Black Mountain area) … YEAR ROUND WEEKLY MOBILE MARKETS! During the government shutdown, please keep your eyes open for friends and neighbors who may be temporarily struggling with access to food and support. Bounty & Soul of Black Mountain is available for anyone in the community who is in need of healthy food and a welcoming community. The Produce to the People program delivers healthy food and wellness resources into local communities with five weekly markets, and anyone and everyone who believes they would benefit from the healthy food is welcome to participate. Located on State Street at Haywood Road in West Asheville, 12 Baskets Cafe serves delicious FREE lunches every weekday, 11:00am-1:00pm. All are welcome and encouraged to come!

FARM BURGER … Fridays, All Day … To show support for those out of work, every Farm Burger location is participating in #FurloughFridays, which includes a free chicken burger, fries and an iced tea to federal government employees who show their valid Federal ID. “At Farm Burger, we have a few core values. One is serving up great food and another is service beyond the counter. Our communities have blessed us, and now we stand united with our furloughed federal employees. We will be offering free meals to furloughed federal employees all day every Friday (while supplies last) until the government shutdown ends.”

ZOOM PASS … Visit area museums and attractions for FREE with a ZOOM pass from Buncombe County Government Public Libraries! All you need is your library card! Buncombe County Libraries have teamed up with Asheville Art Museum, Asheville Museum of Science, The North Carolina Arboretum, WNC Nature Center, Hands On Children’s Museum-WNC, aSHEville Museum, and WNC Historical Association & Smith-McDowell House(so far!) to offer FREE admission to library card holders. One reservation per card holder, reservations can be made up to 30 days in advance, and you may visit each attraction once every 30 days. BILL ASSISTANCE

Many insurance carriers, credit card companies, Federal Credit Unions, and wireless services recognize the financial difficulty currently facing government employees due to the partial government shutdown. If you need assistance, many are providing flexible payment options for their customers. Please contact your local offices or call their customer service numbers to see how they can help with waiving of late fees, extensions, etc.
