FREE HEALTHY MEALS FOR KIDS FINDER … Parents who need food assistance for their children can text FOODNC to 877-877 to locate nearby free meal sites. The texting service is also available in Spanish by texting COMIDA to 877-877. Additionally, No Kid Hungry NC has created a map of local school sites, community organizations and food assistance programs across North Carolina where families can access food. ASHEVILLE CITY SCHOOLS … Please know that our school nutrition, transportation and maintenance departments have already developed a detailed plan about food distribution sites. The plan will all us to continue to provide both breakfast and lunch for our students Monday-Friday. BUNCOMBE COUNTY SCHOOLS … Buncombe County Schools transitioned to their traditional summer meals program serving children in Buncombe County, beginning on June 4th. These meals are provided at no cost, and any child under 18 may receive them.

⬇️ HOW IT WILL WORK THIS SUMMER …

👉 This summer, they will have locations for families to pick up meals curbside at a school or pick up meals at a predetermined location in the community, as they will no longer use yellow buses for meal delivery, so please look for the Buncombe County Schools logo on your meal delivery vehicle.

👉 Breakfast and lunch will be combined. For example, you’ll get lunch for the day and breakfast for the following morning at one stop.

👉 Your Friday meal pick-up will include three lunches and three breakfasts to enjoy over the weekend.

BLACK MOUNTAIN SCHOOLS … Breakfast is 7:30am-8:30am and Lunch is 11:30am-1:30pm at Black Mountain Primary School and Owen High School.

HAYWOOD COUNTY SCHOOLS … Announced April 1st: “Due to changes in staffing schedules, meals from Haywood County Schools will now be distributed Monday through Thursday until further notice, including bus routes and at school distribution sites (those are open 11am-1pm). Meals on Thursdays will include two breakfasts and two lunches.” Mon-Wed, Meals will include a breakfast and a lunch. You may pick-up these items in a drive thru fashion only. Children do not have to be present to receive a meal. Pick-up areas will be clearly marked at each school. If your school is not a food distribution site, feel free to go to any of the schools named. You may pick-up meals for any child ages 1-18 at a pick-up area at each of the following schools.

HENDERSON COUNTY SCHOOLS … Starting Tuesday March 17th, takeout meals will be available at no cost to children aged 2 years in 12 school centers. Monday to Friday 11 a.m. to 1 p. m., students can collect meals outside school tickets at the following sites:

Hendersonville and Bruce Drysdale Elementary Schools are currently on recess and students living in these districts will be able to pick up food at Hendersonville Middle School.

Starting Thursday, March 19, the Meals On the Bus is expanding to TWO routes and EIGHT stops, and will be providing breakfast AND lunch meals to better serve our students during the current school closure. Two  yellow school buses will stop on weekdays at the following neighborhoods, providing meals to children ages 2-18 at no cost

  • King Creek (10:30 a.m. – 10:55 a.m.)
  • Dodd Meadows (11:05 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.)
  • Shorty Collins (11:40 a.m. – 12:05 p.m.)
  • Leisure Lane (12:15 p.m. – 12:35 p.m.)

ROUTE 2

  • Sugarloaf Apts. (10:30 a.m. – 10:55 a.m.)
  • Conner Creek (11:10 a.m. – 11:35 a.m.)
  • Ida Rogers (11:50 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.)
  • Bearwallow Valley Trailer Park (12:30 p.m. – 12:55 p.m.)

Additionally, Sugarloaf Elementary has mobilized a bus to serve meals to children in the North district, and will be making stops on weekdays at the following neighborhoods:

  • Taylor Road (10 a.m.)
  • Corn Mountain Stop (10:20 a.m.)
  • Cedar Bluffs (10:50 a.m.)
  • Cedar Terrace (11:10 a.m.)
  • Dermid Circle (11:40 a.m.)

Families who lack transportation for their children to access these meals must communicate with their child’s school so that HCPS staff can deliver meals to their children at home.

MCDOWELL COUNTY SCHOOLS … Starting March 16th, all eight MCS elementary schools will be open for students to pick up lunch from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM Monday through Friday. Regardless of grade level, go to the nearest elementary school to pick up meals for students. If you can not get to a site, please call your school for assistance.

12 BASKETS CAFE: A PROGRAM OF ASHEVILLE POVERTY INITIATIVE @ 10 Haywood Rd (10.97 km)

BRING A CONTAINER (as big as you want), and we will fill it up in front of our doors. This isn’t a hot lunch – more like an already prepared food (cooked, but cold) grocery run for you to take back and share with your family, friends. ALL are welcome! Here’s what to expect: Show up with your container(s). We will have a menu posted at the door of the Cafe. A companion will take your order and your container inside to fill it with the food you’ve chosen. You won’t be able to stay and eat there (no gatherings and all) but order as much as you need to get you through and even share with those where you are headed. Pots, pans, tupperware, bags, whatever container you have will do! We will do this until we can join together safely around table again. We will also be providing food to the Rescue Mission and Learning Centers and Battery Park.

We’ll be running the pantry a little different to protect our volunteers and shoppers too. We’ll be hosting a “drive-through” pantry. The 74th Annual Asheville Holiday Parade, presented by Bojangles of WNC, rolls, dances and marches through downtown Asheville on Saturday, November 23rd beginning at 11am. The parade features nearly 100 entries including businesses, nonprofits, school and youth groups, marching bands, and of course, Santa and Mrs. Claus.

Madeline is a graduate of UNC Asheville and a resident of Buncombe County. She learned at a young age that sometimes almost losing your life can be the catalyst to truly finding it in a way you never had before.

Madeline is an entrepreneur, speaker and pageant “roll-model” who loves to chase bold adventures. At just 10, she suffered a T-10 spinal cord injury, and since has climbed Mt. Rushmore and traveled the world. Madeline continued her passion of inspiring empowered living by founding a nonprofit organization called Live Boundless, which helps to deliver wheelchairs to medically underserved countries around the world. Her next adventures include being the first woman in a wheelchair to compete in Miss North Carolina USA and traveling to the Philippines and Ecuador for wheelchair delivery projects – along with shark cage diving in Florida!

Not only will Biltmore and Patton Avenues be closed prior to and during the parade, some side streets will also need to be closed off. ART bus routes have to be detoured around the parade as well. For these reasons, the City encourages everyone to plan ahead, allow plenty of time to get downtown, whether by bus, bike, car or on foot. The following routes will be affected by detours:

NORTH: N, N1, N2 and N3

EAST: E1, E2 and 170

SOUTH: S1, S2 and S5

WEST: W3, W4 and S5

The Asheville Downtown Association is once again partnering with Winter Lights at the North Carolina Arboretum and the City of Asheville to bring festive holiday lights to Pack Square and Pritchard Park in Downtown Asheville. On Friday, November 22 from 5-7pm they will host the Downtown Local Lights lighting ceremony, as well as offer FREE photos with Santa and Mrs Claus. They’ll light up the park at 6pm after a brief ceremony, and also have free crafts with the LEAF Easel Rider.

There will be live music by Sirius.B, a live auction and silent auction, local food and drinks, as well as their inflatable planetarium on-site for learning about the night sky.
