We are so lucky to have a bounty of Farmers Markets to choose from in beautiful Asheville and the surrounding area! What better way to teach kids how to eat healthfully than to surround them with fresh grown fruits and vegetables from our local farmers, making the connection between what they eat and where it comes from. In addition to local foods, many of our markets have local crafts, live music, and family friendly entertainment and activities, as well.

HAYWOOD COUNTY SCHOOLS … Announced April 1st: “Due to changes in staffing schedules, meals from Haywood County Schools will now be distributed Monday through Thursday until further notice, including bus routes and at school distribution sites (those are open 11am-1pm). Meals on Thursdays will include two breakfasts and two lunches.” Mon-Wed, Meals will include a breakfast and a lunch. You may pick-up these items in a drive thru fashion only. RASPBERRY PICKING (Season: June-August)

Mid to late June begins Raspberry season in Western North Carolina. You can find them in abundance at the Farmers Markets, or you can make a day of it with the family, and pick yourself a pint or gallon or two at one of the many u-pick farms in our area. We have a few options for You Pick (U-Pick) raspberries in the Asheville area.

As more berries ripen, they will post which day they will be open the next week on the Facebook page. Typically pick days are 8:00 am until 12 noon, rain or shine. $3.50 per pound.”

SUMMER FOOD PROGRAMS

Summer is the hungriest time of the year. Many kids who rely on school meals struggle to get enough to eat during the summer months. Free summer meal programs – at schools and community centers – are the answer.

WEEKDAYS

All across the country, schools and community groups run summer meals sites where kids can eat breakfast and lunch for free. Students may not be in school during the summer months, but they still need healthy and consistent meals! For a variety of reasons, the reality is that many WNC kids are not always getting the meals they require outside of their school’s care and a hungry child cannot thrive. No Kid Hungry helps local organizations launch and operate these sites, and they also help fund needed equipment like mobile meals trucks.

But neighborhood meals sites aren’t much good if families don’t know about them. That’s why No Kid Hungry runs a summer meals texting service. Parents, grandparents and caregivers can text ‘FOOD’ to 877-877 to find free summer meals sites in their neighborhoods. We’ve rounded up our local locations, below. NO I.D. OR REGISTRATION REQUIRED, so whether you’re close to out, or traveling, a nutritious meal is close by.

BUNCOMBE COUNTY SCHOOLS, ASHEVILLE CITY SCHOOLS & YMCA of WNC

Volunteers with the Buncombe County Schools, Asheville City Schools and the YMCA of WNC summer meals service have teamed up, and are helping to meet this need by bringing meals to the area children who need them. The purpose of the summer feeding program is to fill the gap in between school sessions where all children can thrive and succeed. “Hunger should not be the obstacle that inhibits their growth as individuals in anyway during their formative years.” Buncombe County Schools in particular aims to offer a variety of activities at their different sites to go along with the meals at no charge to create a day camp atmosphere.

BLUEBERRY PICKING (Season: Mid/Late June-August)

Mid to late June begins Blueberry season in Western North Carolina. You can find them in abundance at the Farmers Markets, or you can make a day of it with the family, and pick yourself a pint or gallon or two at one of the many u-pick farms in our area. We have a few options for You Pick (U-Pick) blueberries in the Asheville area.

They are a FREE U-pick patch, but donations are appreciated. Bring your own bucket & a friend. Please, no smoking, no pets, and no selling the blueberries. Pick only the amount that you can use, and leave the rest for others. They’ve do not spray and you’re welcome to pick any time, but they recommend people come early in the morning or late in the evening because it gets really hot and humid in the middle of the day. Please remember this invitation is ONLY for blueberry picking. All other fruit trees are on private property. If you pick from anything other than a blueberry bush you are trespassing. There are 4 separate properties here (within the fence) and not all of them are the same people that own the blueberries. They can call the police if you’re on their property picking from their trees.

Heritage Red Raspberries ripen for u-pick early June, and the first crop is typically available through July, with a 2nd crop ripening in mid September and available through November (around Thanksgiving). Wineberries, Native Blackcap Blackberries, Thornless Blackberries, Native Blackberries, and Blueberries will all ripen enough for u-pick by the end of June and will go through November (around Thanksgiving).

It’s just a house with a field of blueberries, there isn’t a name or anything, and he will put out a sign when they’re ready to pick, Large, sweet, and juicy. “I planted 725 blueberry plants, 5 different varieties, over 5 years ago. The idea of planting blueberry bushes came to me because I grew tired of mowing the grass. I thought ” what else could I do other than mow grass ??” I had a blueberry bush at the top of the hill that was the inspiration. I have to many berries to pick myself and hated to see them go to waste. I have been doing u-pick for 2 years. I’m happy to offer fresh, mostly organic berries for people to enjoy.”
