Appalachian Folkways Series
Join us in celebration of the craft and skill of the Southern Appalachian mountains. Sit a spell on the porch of our commissary just as it was in 1902, or maybe throw some horseshoes in the shade of the King House as you listen to the gentle strum of the banjo. Stroll down to the garden and touch the plants that provide food and medicine. Watch as local crafts people extract dyes from our local plants for their wool to be used on our traditional loom.
During our Appalachian Folkways Series events, Cradle of Forestry guests can visit with local crafters across a wide range of skills. From fiber arts to blacksmithing, visitors will have the chance to spend time with local practitioners of the crafts that have been a part of life in these mountains for generations.
It’s a time to connect with the Appalachian way of life, and for many, a chance to rekindle memories of a time when folks lived more in sync with the rhythms and resources of the natural world around them. It’s a day where our visitors can take a step back in time and interact with a variety a traditional crafters while old-time Appalachian tunes echo through the mountain air.
