German Friendship Dinner

Mouth-watering sausage, language lessons, polka music and German beer are on tap for Folkmoot’s German Friendship Dinner, scheduled on Thursday, March 7, 2019 from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. in Waynesville. True to Folkmoot’s goal of celebrating multicultural arts and diversity in our community, this friendship dinner will include foods and beverage, educational activities and entertainment honoring German culture.

Local families with German heritage will be preparing a dinner featuring bratwurst, potato pancakes, red cabbage and Black Forest chocolate cake for dessert. German-style beer will be made available by BearWaters Brewing Company. Dinner will be served in the Folkmoot cafeteria, followed by music by Mountain Top Polka Band and a German language lesson in the Queen Auditorium.

Tickets for this event are $18 for adult $10 for students and can be purchased at Folkmoot.org or by calling 828-452-2997. Limited seating is available so advance purchase is advised. Parking is available in the back of the Folkmoot building.

Growing Up Black in Asheville [1958 – 1962]: One Man’s Perspective, presented by Al Whitesides, County Commissioner, District 1

A presentation honoring Black History Month describing Asheville during the early days of the Civil Rights Movement

Sponsored by the Friends of East Asheville Library

Admission is free, but donations to support the Friends’ work will be greatly appreciated.

One further note: At the recent Kenilworth MLK Celebration, a perceptive woman, Viola Williams, stood and asked, how many there were under 21. Of course, of a huge gathering, there were just a few. “We’re preaching to the choir!” she said. It’s our young who need to hear this.” Thus you might consider bringing your young who you think might be inspired by this program

Bounce Into Spring Family Festival

Celebrate spring’s arrival at this family festival (liability waiver is required) with FREE all-ages adventure play stations in the center of all the action. There’s nothing quite like shaking off winter’s cabin fever — especially around the ponds at Charles D Owen Park.

Our popular Kids Fishing Tournament is also scheduled for the same day, open to all youth 15 and under. Fishing will begin at 8:30 a.m. and end promptly at 11:30 a.m. Registration is $10 per angler with more info below.

In the past, Bounce Into Spring play stations have included:
– Slackline
– Soccer Shot
– Bow & Arrow (Nerf-style)
– Football Target Throw
– Basketball Shot
– Disc Golf
– Agility Course
– Arts + Crafts with the LEAF Community Arts Teaching Artists
– Imagination adventures with the Swannanoa Library Branch

Fishing Tournament info:
– The semi-annual event is open to all children ages 15 and under and is sponsored by Buncombe County Recreation Services.
– Fishing begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends promptly at 11:30 a.m.
– Register online now through April 16 at midnight. On-site registration will also be available at 8:00 a.m. the day of the tournament. Your registration fee covers fishing bait, snacks, and a hot dog lunch at the conclusion of the tournament.
– No fishing license is required for children under 16 years of age.
– This is a catch and release event. Charles D. Owen Park will supply a bucket for each competitor’s catch. After the fish has been weighed and measured, it will be released back into the lake.
– Participants bring their own poles.
– Fishing is allowed in the Charles D. Owen Park ponds only; any competitor caught fishing in Beetree Creek or the Swannanoa River will be disqualified. No boat fishing is allowed. All children must be accompanied by at least one adult.
– Children will be grouped into one of five age categories and prizes awarded in each category. Prizes will be given for the biggest fish, the smallest fish, and the most fish caught.
– In addition, all competitors in every age group will have an opportunity to show off their casting skills. Casting poles and targets are provided and children can demonstrate their ability anytime during the tournament. There are prizes for the winners of the casting competition, too!

First-Ever Asheville Pizza Fight

PIZZA FIGHT COUNT DOWN! The First-Ever Asheville pizza fight is happening on Wednesday, February 27th, from 1:30 – 3:00pm at The Asheville Masonic Temple! The public is welcome to come join us, for FREE! Watch the judges, purchase slices, and vote on line!

So far we have Manicomio, Tin Can Pizzeria, Favillas New York Pizza, East Village Grille, and Pizza Mind, and I want to add a few more! Strangely, it’s been more difficult to get venues to deliver pizzas to this contest than any other food we’ve done so far! Ha ha! Ok!

All money raised by pizza sales will be donated to the restoration and preservation of the temple’s historic, hand-painted theater backdrops!

This event is co-sponsored by Shay Brown Events, and Takeout Central! It is FREE to the public.
