Saturday Night Lights – $384,000 Rolex Grand Prix CSI 5*

Attention #TIEC fans, make sure you don’t miss this #SaturdayNightLights! It’s going to be the biggest and most competitive SNL of the YEAR. The $384,000 Rolex Grand Prix CSI 5* will see the best horse and rider athletes jump at the highest of heights! FREE general admission and FREE parking.

Activities begin at 5pm in the Legends Club Plaza and the adorable Hobby Horse competition starts at 5:30pm on the front lawn. (Pre-register here to participate: https://bit.ly/2see5ge)
Then catch the incredible 5* jumping competition in Tryon Stadium starting at 7pm! Watch from the stadium seats or enjoy VIP seating on the Legends Club Porch (details below).

Highland Brewing will also be here passing out samples to adults 21+! The sampling station will be located under the Announcer’s Tower in Vendor Row at 5pm.

Family Activities Include: Pony rides, face painting, juggler, magician, carousel rides, coloring books, and t-shirt tosses.

Sandburg Movie Night – “The Gold Rush” with Charlie Chaplin (10+yrs)

Join the first ever Sandburg night at the Cinema! While working as a journalist in Chicago, Sandburg was a movie critic during the Silent Movie Era. The Gold Rush starring Charlie Chaplin was a sensation when it first opened at the Orpheum Theater in 1925. Experience it yourself at the Flat Rock Cinema on Sunday, October 28 at 4pm. Come dressed in 1920s fashion and get into the spirit of “The Gold Rush”.The movie runs approx. 95 minutes.

The film is Not Rated, but should be appropriate for ages 10+.

Therapeutic Recreation: Cooking 101 (ages 15+ with disabilities)

3rd Wednesday of each month, September-December

This intro to cooking class is open to individuals ages 15+ with disabilities. We will discuss food safety, making healthful decisions, and prepare a meal to enjoy together. Registration opens online in August.

Teaching artist Cleaster Cotton will lead this mixed media art workshop for veteran families. You and your family will have fun exploring the ALNUGE Codes (“Alphabets, Numbers, Geometrics.”) Participants will use basic arts materials to create shapes, lines, colors, and texture resulting in colorful designs, portraits, and narratives. Activities will include drawing, coloring, cutting, and collaging. Families will be introduced to cubism and viewing and reading art. Discussion, reflection, and inquiry into the artist’s point of view will foster cultural connections. Join us at the Refinery Creator Space for a morning of creativity!

Heroes Wanted for a High-Adventure Role-Playing Experience

Calling all gamers, potential gamers, and future gamers!

We are hosting an afternoon tabletop role playing game on November 7th for 6th-12th graders.

Story Time with Children’s Author Jean Reagan

Our weekly Story Time event, but better! Jean Reagan will share books from her best selling How To Series (How to Babysit a Grandma, How to Babysit a Grandpa, How to Catch a Santa, How to Surprise a Dad, etc.) and present her most recent release, How to Scare a Ghost.

In How to Scare a Ghost, Guided by a tongue-in-cheek instructional style, two children show young readers how to set the stage for a spooktacular Halloween by carving pumpkins, playing games, and even reading scary stories. Has a ghost showed up? Great! Now the fun–er, the scaring–can really begin. Filled with charming role-reversal humor, creative ideas, and lots of holiday spirit, How to Scare a Ghost is sure to delight kids, parents, and things that go bump in the night.

Frankenreads at Malaprop’s

Celebrate the 200th anniversary of Frankenstein with us on Halloween!

Starting at 1 pm, stop into Malaprop’s and perform a 1-minute dramatic reading from Frankenstein on our Instastory to be entered into a drawing for cool prizes! Prizes include an autographed copy of We Sold Our Souls by Grady Hendrix. Costumes are enthusiastically encouraged (but not required.)

At 3 pm, Bookseller Lauren will host Spooky Storytime for the kiddos! There will be cupcakes!

At 6 pm, join us for more reading, more snacks, and more spooky fun to cap off the day! Prizes will be awarded at 7 pm. Prizes will not be mailed. You must be local to win.

Frankenreads is an international event organized by the Keats-Shelley Association of America, and similar events will be held all over the world.
