Locals Fall Guided Hike Series

Calling outdoorsy locals! Join us on three family- and dog- friendly hiking tours! Interesting in touring the archaeology sites at Warren Wilson, the ruins at Rattlesnake Lodge, or geological events along the Blue Ridge Parkway – all with local experts? This affordable series may not happen again, so sign up while you can at www.landandloreecotours.com!

A special series of guided hikes provided by an archaeologist, ecologist, and geologist! These local and family-friendly hiking tours occur Saturdays (Oct 21st-Nov4th) 9:00 am -12:00 pm.  See below for the details of each tour. Tours are $30/adult and KIDS ARE FREE!

Oct 21, 2017: Rattlesnake Lodge History and Appalachian Forest Tour. Join us on this autumn hike along the Mountain to Sea Trail to the historic ruins of Rattlesnake Lodge with ecologist Dr. Jeff Beacham. We will trek through a rich hardwood forest and enjoy vibrant fall colors, weave through huge boulders, and explore the ruins of Rattlesnake Lodge.  The lodge, built in 1903 and 1904, was the summer home for Dr. Chase P. Ambler and his family.  What remains are the stacked-stone foundations of the lodge, barn, tool house, spring house, swimming pool, and several surrounding buildings.  You will learn about the important role Dr. Ambler played in the conservation of the Southern Appalachians and the establishment of Pisgah National Forest and Great Smokey Mountains National Park.  The hike is 2.8 miles round trip – easy (to somewhat moderate) difficulty.  For this tour, we meet at 9:00 am in front of the Ingles near Exit 21 on Hwy 26, north of Asheville.  The address of this Ingles is: 499 Weaverville Rd, Asheville, NC 28804.

Oct 28, 2017: Warren Wilson Cherokee Digging Site and Archaeology Lab Tour.  Archaeologist Dr. David Moore gives a special tour of our local Cherokee digging site, Cherokee culture, and the college archaeology lab. Take a walk into Cherokee Past on the Swannanoa River. We’ll gather on the campus at Warren Wilson College and spend about 90 minutes walking along the Swannanoa River to visit several archaeological sites associated with the Cherokee Indians.  We’ll talk about the history and culture of the Cherokees and how archaeologists study the Cherokee past.  We’ll also visit the Warren Wilson College Archaeology Lab to see artifacts and learn more about local western North Carolina archaeology.  For this tour, we will meet at 9:00 am in the pavilion next to the Jensen Building on the campus of Warren Wilson. The address of the Jensen Building is 117 Lower College Road, Swannanoa, NC 28778.  Please click here for a PDF of the Warren Wilson campus map, where you can find the Jensen building (bright blue and lower right area of the map).

Nov 4, 2017: Stories of early Appalachia along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Professional geologist Mark Hostetter shares untold stories of gold, rubies, and sapphires – how mines and minerals changed local history! Come with us as we take a journey back in time and discover fascinating stories about the geology and mining history of this region.  Just imagine historic gold mines, ruby and sapphire mines, ancient mountains, dramatic and fascinating down to earth’s geologic history right in our backyard.  Our guide is a professional geologist with over 40 years of field geology and mining experience, and he loves to share his passion for geology with anyone who will listen.  Come, listen and learn and have a great trip.  Short, easy stops with barely any hiking along the Parkway, to capture the final days of a beautiful fall season. For this tour, we will meet at 9:00 am in front of the Ingles across from the Asheville Outlet Mall.  The address of this Ingles is: 863 Brevard Rd, Asheville, NC 28806.

The Change – Community Concert for Kindness

HANGER HALL SCHOOL FOR GIRLS PRESENTS “THE CHANGE”
COMMUNITY CONCERT FOR KINDNESS:
STAND UP, STAND STRONG, STAND TOGETHER

The all-girl teenage rock/funk band The Change will bring its high-energy, confidence-boosting, anti-bullying, be-yourself music and messages from West Virginia to Asheville next month. Presented by Hanger Hall School for Girls, The Change will play a community concert at New Mountain (38 N French Broad Avenue), one of Asheville’s premier music venues, on Wednesday, October 18th. The show is FREE for students with a suggested $5 donation for parents/adults. Doors at 5:30pm, show at 6:00pm.

Loved by kids and adults alike, the girls have been playing together as a band since age 10. One of the event organizers Michael Weizman said, “We saw them at LEAF and our daughters were transfixed by their unbelievable energy. My wife and I knew immediately that we wanted to find a way to bring them to Asheville to share their inspiring messages with the community at large.” The Weizman family is partnering with Hanger Hall to bring The Change to Asheville.

Hanger Hall’s Head of School Catherine McClain added, “We’re delighted The Change will be coming to Asheville and sharing their messages of self-worth and self-confidence which align closely with our message to young girls who are growing into capable women: discover who you are and what you have to offer the world, have a healthy and happy sense of identity, and be the best version of yourself that you can be.”

Citing Paloma Faith, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, ZZ Ward, George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic, and Bruno Mars as influences, The Change plays both covers and originals. Their high-energy sound is sure to get the audience on their feet and dancing! To secure a ticket or make a donation, visit http://bit.ly/2yG7BKN.

The Wall That Heals, a traveling replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, comes to Burnsville for four days, Oct. 12-15. The Wall and accompanying mobile education center honor the soldiers who fought in the Vietnam War and their families. It will be on display at the baseball field at Mountain Heritage High School and will be open to visitors 24 hours a day.

The 250-foot replica of The Wall in Washington, D.C. — managed by the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund — bears more than 58,000 names of the men and women who died in Vietnam. Since its debut in 1996, the traveling exhibit has been on display in nearly 500 communities throughout the country as well as Ireland and Canada. The Wall will travel to 38 cities and towns in 2017, and Burnsville is the only location in North Carolina this year.

“This exhibit is about our veterans, about people who sacrificed and did what America asked of them,” says Dr. Tony Tipton, superintendent of Yancey County Schools, a sponsor of The Wall’s visit. “As a history teacher, you can talk about war and sacrifice and responsibility, but this gives students a chance to step back and see the impact it has on some of our veterans and see it through their eyes.”

The mobile education center, which travels with The Wall, includes photos of service members whose names are on The Wall and memorabilia left at The Wall in Washington, D.C.
The schedule of events for The Wall’s time in Burnsville includes visits from students in Yancey, Avery, Madison and Mitchell county schools, as well as Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops.
“It’s a wonderful educational opportunity that can really bind the community together,” says Taube Roy, a JROTC teacher at Mountain Heritage High School and Army veteran who has assisted in coordinating The Wall’s visit.

Memorial services will take place Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 6 p.m. for Vietnam veterans killed or missing in action from Yancey, Madison, Avery and Mitchell counties.
The Wall That Heals will be open to the public around the clock, from the opening ceremony Thursday, Oct. 12, at 8 a.m. until Sunday, Oct. 15, at 3 p.m. Admission is free.
