Black Mountain Ghost Tour (PG-13)

Asheville, Montford and Black Mountain’s Only Interactive Ghost Tours
Adults ($20) • Youth, 6-15 ($13) • Children 6 and under (FREE)

Downtown Black Mountain, about 12 miles east of Asheville on I40. GPS: 122 Cherry St., at the park bench in front of the Dark City Deli.

Black Mountain is a sleepy little mountain town established in 1812 as the town of Grey Eagle, it was nicknamed “The Dark City” by the early settlers. Home to Dr. Billy Graham (in Montreat), the town is known as a spiritual and healing place. Surrounded by eight Christian conferences, many operated as Tuberculosis sanitoriums at the turn of the 19th century. By day, Black Mountain’s quaint downtown streets are filled with rocking chairs, local artisan & crafter boutiques, antiques, good books and delicious local cuisine. Live music by local musicians is heard pouring out into the evening air from several historic pubs. And then, just a little after sunset…a regular cast of ghostly characters spill into the streets, begging to tell us their stories of disease, war, heartbreak and railroad history that literally causes this little town to “ROCK” with spiritual energy… such as early settlers, Native Americans, slaves and a white german shepherd that died in 1948. What is legend and what is truth about the mysterious Seven Sisters Mountain range that looms just to north of town and how it is connected to infamous Brown Mountain Lights? Why will you shed a tear when you hear the story of Harley, the gentle spirit that haunted Marti’s Quilt Shop on Sutton Avenue? Is the “Lady in Red” of the Gladstone Inn (mentioned in 8 different oral histories recorded by UNCA) the same redheaded spirit that haunts a well-known pub on Cherry Street? Which building was a sanatorium that still contains the spirit of a young woman that waits for her family to come back for?

As scary as all these stories sound, we are proud to say that our tour remains FAMILY FRIENDLY, with stories suitable for a PG-13 mature youth.

AVL Scarefest 3

Join us at our annual Halloween-themed gaming convention in beautiful Black Mountain, NC! View our schedule here:  https://warhorn.net/events/asheville-scarefest and aquire tickets here: http://avlscarefest.com/shop/

“Can I bring my kid(s)?

Yes, you can! However, we ask that your offspring be at least 12 years old before you send him/her/it off to play at a table where you’re not supervising. Younger children can play at the sametable with you. We do ask that children be directly supervised at all times during the con. Humanoids 13-15 do not need constant supervision (obviously), but we do ask that they have a responsible adult present while they are at Scarefest.

Also, if you have concerns about a particular game’s suitability for your offspring, please note that we do have a rating system for the game listings to give you some idea of the content. Understand that neither we nor GMs can guarantee that another player at the table won’t burst out with something outside of the rating, but the GMs will do their best to run the game within it. Also, it’s worth bearing in mind that our con is in an open hall, and there’s every possibility your spawn might overhear the occasional unsavoury comment or ritual to Yog Sothoth. And just to be doubleplus clear, please bear in mind that this is a Halloween-themed convention, so spooky stuff will abound. Please take your child’s temperament into consideration before bringing them to a hall full of spiders, skulls, and possibly creepy clowns. We would honestly hate to be responsible for giving a child nightmares for years. Our parents did that to us, and look how we ended up.”

Gazers of the Galaxy

Are you looking for Pisgah National Forest stargazing programs for your family? Until the 1920’s, most astronomers believed that the Milky Way Galaxy contained all the stars and planets in the entire universe. It wasn’t until later that they discovered that our galaxy was one of many! In this very special trip through time and space, The Pisgah Field School will be teaming up with our friends from Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute (PARI) for a series of Pisgah National Forest stargazing programs that will challenge what you think you know about our small planet and the very large galaxy that it resides in. PARI Educators will teach you about stargazing equipment and usage, telescope use and what constellations you might see during a summer in the mountains, and how our solar system plays a part in the grandeur that is the Milky Way Galaxy. And what about all those Sci-Fi movies? Can things explode in space and would it make a sound? How does the moon play a role in our ocean tides? In the event of rainy or cloudy weather, we will move the program indoors for continued activities to teach you what makes our night sky so unique and beautiful. You’ll help become a “guardian of the galaxy” after spending an evening with PARI and Western NC’s incredible nightscape. This is a rain or shine event. Pre-registration is required.
