Teen Crafternoon (6th-12th Grade)

Fletcher Library: Teens grades 6-12, come by the Fletcher Library between 2 and 4pm to create your own unique clothespin photo frame. (while supplies last) Program is free and sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

Asheville Hoops!!

For children in grades K-5:  Prepare to move your body, dance, play, and laugh!  Come learn to rock, roll, twirl, spin,and twist a hoop and most importantly, have fun!  Melmacpink will offer a Hoopdance performance as well, sure to wow ages 1-100!  Registration Required- Call or stop by the Mills River Library to register.

Word on the Street/Voz de Los Jovenes Celebration!

The Word on the Street/Voz de los Jovenes Squad invites you to join them in a FREE tropical-themed celebration of all the youth who have submitted their art to this bilingual online arts magazine visioned, created and led by youth of color. They’ve been receiving submissions from across the country and working hard to review and publish them. There will a fish fry and side dishes prepared by Chef Clarence Robinson of Cooking with Comedy as well as readings, performances and artwork shared by local contributors. Interpretation for English and Spanish speakers will be provided and the event is family-friendly.

Fiddles and Folklife: Young Old-Time Music Day

FREE and open to the public.

An afternoon of traditional music and dancing to celebrate and appreciate the accomplishments of the young old-time musicians of Western North Carolina. No contests this year, just music, dancing, and cakewalks!

1:00pm – Youth Showcase … Open to individuals up to age 18, to perform one traditional old-time song or tune (with or without accompaniment). Open to all instruments and singers.

2:00pm – JAM Showcase … Participants of the local Junior Appalachian Musician (JAM) programs are invited to preform two or three songs or tunes.

3:00pm – Old-Time Band Showcase, with Square Dances and Cakewalks … Open mic for bands of all ages, hosted by the Warren Wilson College Old-Time Band.

Spring Tour de Falls

May 13th & 14th, 9:00am-2:30pm

 

Tour de Falls is a family friendly guided bus tour of Triple Falls, High Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and Lake Julia in DuPont State Recreational Forest.

Tickets are not required but donations are requested.
$12 donation (18yrs+)
$6 donation (6 – 17yrs)

All donations benefit Friends of DuPont Forest.* Cash or check only please.

Tour de Falls Parking and Shuttle Service
Join the tour at the entrance off Stanton Road just south of High Falls Access Area (aka the doughnut hole entrance).

Planning for Tour de Falls

  • Visitors should bring snacks and water.
  • Buses run every 30 minutes from 9:30am to 2:30pm.
  • A full tour may take 3 hours or longer.
  • Friends of DuPont Forest volunteers provide information about history and natural resources within the 10,400 acre forest.
  • Pets, wheelchairs, and walkers are not allowed on buses.
  • Light refreshments will be available in the lodge (Ranger Station) overlooking Lake Julia.
  • Busses are not handicapped accessible

Billy Jonas Band – Family Concert

Asheville’s own Billy Jonas Band will bring their creative, interactive and soul-inspiring family concert to the Grey Eagle. It’s funky folk music for the whole family! They’ve got some NEW music up their sleeves — be the first to hear! They’ll also feature songs from their most recent family CD, “Build It Back Again”, as well as old favorites enjoyed by all ages.

80th Anniversary of the Vagabond Players Opening Reception

Come join us for the opening reception for the 80th Anniversary of the Vagabond Players exhibit. The exhibit includes vintage props, hats, lighting instruments, sketches and video. A special treat for the opening reception will be Leona’s Lemonade.

Earthshine Nature Programs Fundraiser

***RESCHEDULED FROM APRIL 17th***

 

Bring the family and friends and join us as Oskar Blues hosts their Making a Difference Monday fundraiser for Earthshine Nature Programs (501c3).

Come early because between the hours of noon and 8pm Oskar Blues will donate 10% of taproom sales to Earthshine Nature Programs!

Proceeds from this fundraiser will support the final phase of the construction of our classroom solar array project. Learn more about this community supported renewable energy project by viewing our construction video here:  https://youtu.be/VkSA8w3jMx0

Learn all about our wildlife education, rehabilitation and outreach programming. Meet and even touch and hold many of our education animals including Rosie and Rex the Tortoises, Ashley the Red Tailed Boa Constrictor, Fiona the Ball Python and Piggy the Western Hognose!

Special guests include representives from Mountain True who are working hard to protect the places we share.

Walter Kidd, owner and curator of Serpentarium Magic in Mills River, and his friend Peewee – a 22+ foot long python!

Joyce Pearsall of Monarch Watch will be on hand to educate you about the beautiful Monarch butterfly and how you can help them.

Peter Kipp, of Curtis Wright Falconry will be there with some of his raptors.

Alan Cameron will be there sharing some of his wonderful wildlife photos and stories from Dupont Forest and he may even have an amphibian friend along with him for you to meet!

Find out how you can go solar at home with Warren’s Solar Superheroes!

Learn about and possibly take a ride in an electric car! The Blue Ridge Electric Vehicle club will have several sleek, fast, EVs on display including the Nissan Leaf, Tesla Model S, BMW i3, and the all new Chevrolet Bolt!

Live Music! Between 6-8pm so bring an instrument and join in with the old time music jam!

Local artists will be on hand offering their unique wildlife and nature themed art, photography, and jewelry with proceeds directly supporting our solar array project.

We will also have a fundraiser table full of unique items with all proceedes supporting our solar array project. If you have any items you would like to donate to the sale table please do contact us.

Oskar Blues will have their Chub Burger food truck on site to fulfill your hunger and of course there will be loads of wonderful beers to choose from.
