Serafina Holiday Book Signing

EVENT MOVED TO SUNDAY DEC 16 DUE TO SNOW.

Join #1 New York Times Best Selling author Robert Beatty at his one and only book-signing event of the holiday season, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 16, at Barnes & Noble-Asheville Mall.

Give the readers on your gift list something inspired by the mystery, history and magic of the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains: signed and personalized copies of Beatty’s best sellers, WILLA OF THE WOOD, SERAFINA AND THE BLACK CLOAK, SERAFINA AND THE TWISTED STAFF, and SERAFINA AND THE SPLINTERED HEART.

PLEASE NOTE: The store will be using a wristband system to help manage the book-signing line at this event. Wristbands will be available starting at 11 a.m. the day of the event and throughout the book signing. For more info about the wristbands, please call the store at (828) 296-7335.

WILLA OF THE WOOD is the story of a 12-year-old orphaned girl who lives deep in the Great Smoky Mountains in 1900. One of the last members of an ancient race of forest people who are highly in tune with the trees and animals, Willa spends her days and nights foraging and scavenging from the cabins of her people’s greatest enemies, the axe-wielding “newcomers.” Through a series of action-packed encounters and an unexpected kindness, Willa begins to realize that both the newcomers and her own people are not what she’s always thought, setting in motion her quest for a new home and sense of belonging in a changing world.

WILLA OF THE WOOD debuted in July 2018 at #1 on the New Times Best Sellers List. Kirkus Reviews calls it “A moving, atmospheric journey of hope.”

WILLA OF THE WOOD and the SERAFINA SERIES are published by Disney-Hyperion. The SERAFINA SERIES is the story of a brave and unusual 12-year-old girl who lives secretly in the basement of the grand Biltmore Estate. SERAFINA AND THE BLACK CLOAK, the first book in the series, was a #1 New York Times Best Seller, remained on the best sellers list for more than 60 weeks, and was the winner of the 2016 Pat Conroy Southern Book Prize. The second book in the series, SERAFINA AND THE TWISTED STAFF, became a NYT #1 Best Seller in the first week of its launch. The third book, SERAFINA AND THE SPLINTERED HEART, launched Serafina onto the NYT Best Selling Series List, along with such titles as Harry Potter and The Hunger Games.

3rd Annual Southside Community Thanksgiving Dinner

In celebration of our community, Green Opportunities, the Asheville Housing Authority, Upfront Management Sports Agency, the Residents’ Council of the Asheville Housing Authority, and Southside community partners invite you to join us for the 3rd Annual Southside Community Thanksgiving Dinner. This holiday meal will take place on Tuesday, November 22, 2016 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM in the gymnasium of the Arthur R. Edington Education & Career Center, and is free and open to the public.

The GO Kitchen Ready program cooked 20 turkeys for last year’s dinner, which drew over 500 guests from across Asheville and the Southside neighborhood. This year, the Kitchen Ready team will prepare turkey, ham, side dishes, desserts, and drinks. We will be joined on the serving line by local civic leaders, including Mayor Esther Manheimer, Vice Mayor Gwen Wisler, District Attorney Todd Williams, and Terry Bellamy, Director of Communications for the Asheville Housing Authority.

“Breaking bread with family, friends, and community is what makes America great,” says Shuvonda Harper, Edington Center Office Assistant and a key partner for the Thanksgiving meal.

GO Kitchen Ready is a culinary training program that prepares graduates for employment in the food service industry through a partnership between Green Opportunities, Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College, and Asheville Independent Restaurants (AIR).

According to Liam Luttrell-Rowland, Chef Director of GO Kitchen Ready, “the Thanksgiving meal at the Edington Center is now a tradition, and an example of cross sector partnership between city officials, Edington Center partners, GO Kitchen Ready and the community at large. This year, The Kresge Foundation is making it possible for us to host the biggest gathering yet, and we see this as an amazing opportunity to build fellowship through food and celebrate the Southside in new ways.”

This event is made possible through a partnership between Green Opportunities, Housing Authority of the City of Asheville, Residents Council of the Asheville Housing Authority, Upfront Management Sports Agency, MANNA Food Bank, Dr. Wesley Grant, Sr. Southside Center, Forever Living Clothes Closet, New Mount Olive Baptist Church, Brown Temple C.M.E. Church, Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, and Asheville Kitchen Cabinet.

We request that you please wear soft bottom shoes to the event (no high heels) to avoid damaging the gymnasium’s new floor.

For more information, please contact Gwen Hill at gwen@greenopportunities.org or (828) 398-4158 ext. 112.

Carnival of Nuts

Come one, come all, to the Carnival of Nuts! Join us in celebration of the marvelous, hard-shelled fruits so generously raining down upon our yards and streets, and to contribute to the Nutty Buddy Collective’s effort to bring our native tree crops to market. This is a fundraiser to help the NBC purchase commercial-scale native nut processing equipment. Learn more and donate at: www.gofundme.com/nutfundraiser

All ages are welcome – fun kid activities from 4 – 6pm.

A $10 minimum donation for entry gets you 1 bag of tokens to spend on food, games, and fun. Under 12 free from 4-6pm.

The Carnival will include:

* A nut featured dinner prepared by guest chefs from Blacksburg, VA
* Nutty treats from French Broad Chocolates, OWL Bakery, Vortex Doughnuts, The Hop Ice Cream, and others featuring black walnuts, hickory nuts, chestnuts, and acorns.
* Chestnut Beer crafted by a local brewer
* A high-flying Aerial Squirrel performace and flying squirrel activity for kids
* A variety of kids activities, including Nut Putt Putt, Nut Pie and Cake Walks, a Nut Scavenger Hunt, Piñuta, and Nut Cracking for Kids
* Info and demonstrations, including Nut Milking Stall and Nut Oil Pressing
* Osker and Amber of Glorious Forest Farms will be offering wild nut treats and information
* Silent Auction items, including a Wild Foods Hike with No Taste Like Home
* Guest speakers including Bob Stehli (president of NNGA) on the economics of nuts, Cathy Cleary (co-founder of West End Bakery) with a squirrel cooking demonstration, Chuck Marsh (Useful Plants Nursery and Living System Design) on land access, and Gabi White (Fruit Nut Extraordinaire) with some squirrrelly tall tales.

Nuts are some of the most nutritious and delicious foods to grace this good earth, and the Nutty Buddy Collective is committed to bringing them to your table. That’s why we’ve been working over the past three years to form long-term lease agreements and to plant diverse nut-centered orchards. And now we’re looking for your help: we are raising funds to purchase nut processing equipment. A large, powerful cracker that can bust up walnut and hickory shells at a fast rate is the linchpin of a nut processing system. Dehulling, drying, and separating machines will also be necessary.

Your donations will help us purchase the equipment necessary to move niche crops like black walnut and hickories toward the central place they deserve on our farms and in our regional cuisine. Our fundraising goal is $10,000 dollars. This equipment will also serve as a community resource, allowing NBC to provide cracking services and to buy nuts from homeowners and foragers.

On the banks of Buck Creek, you’ll find the “mansion house” that was the centerpiece of Col. John Carson’s 640-acre plantation initially constructed in 1793. Amassing great wealth in land, slaves, gold and plantation production, Carson and several of his sons contributed extensively to the political and economic climate on local, state and national levels.

At the time of his death, Carson’s “Pleasant Gardens” was the home of fourteen members of the Carson family and sixty-eight slaves of African descent. Upon inheriting the property in1841, the youngest son, Jonathon Logan Carson, undertook an extensive renovation adding a third floor, the bi-level front porches and additional rooms on the rear of the house. This house served as the center of activity and governance for three years until a courthouse was built in the nearby city of Marion. The stagecoach made regular stops bringing news and many houseguests, among them David Crockett and possibly, Sam Houston and Andrew Jackson. One of the last skirmishes of the Civil War occurred on the property.

With original structural integrity and lovely period authentic furnishings, the mansion offers a delightful walk through the Carson family’s experience in the Revolutionary War, Native American struggles, the Civil War, the North Carolina Gold Rush, the political/economic climate of the times, slavery and plantation life.

The Historic Carson House museum is an evolving operation with the continuing acquisition of period pieces and changing exhibits. The most recent addition is the only one of its kind in this area, detailing the slave experience in western North Carolina.
