Asheville Coffee Expo

Asheville’s annual, one-day celebration of all things coffee. As we transition into our 4th consecutive year, we are shaking things up a bit! This year there are TWO ways to enjoy our celebration.

First, stroll through our traditional Outdoor Street Faire for free and see what local artists, food vendors, and coffee shops are showcasing these days.

Next, embrace the full experience, and snag yourself a ticket to sip the region’s best coffee, experience barista competitions, experiment with innovative espresso drinks and learn more about the evolving coffee scene.

In attempts to make our expo as sustainable as possible, we have partnered with local pottery purveyor, The Bright Angle, to craft some beautiful, one of a kind sampling cups for our ticket holders. So upgrade your ticket for an extra $10 to support local arts, keep things eco-friendly and take home your own handcrafted ACE sampling cup.

Keep scrolling for an in-depth breakdown of this year’s programming.

Your ticket grants you access to:

The Espresso Bar
Baristas from a selection of coffee shops will showcase unique and inventive espresso drinks. Each coffee shop will have a two-hour window to create their inspired drinks. Anyone who has purchased a ticket to the expo will have access to FREE samples of these drinks.

The Lectures
Throughout the festival, thought leaders and industry professionals will share their knowledge about this year’s theme: sustainability in coffee.

The Competitions
Asheville Coffee Expo competitions will test barista’s ability to make fantastic looking and tasting drinks in a variety of situations. Head inside Pleb to experience a uniquely Asheville take on your average barista latte competition.

The Cupping Tent
Wanna taste coffee like a pro? Join highly skilled coffee professionals as they taste you through coffees provided by our roasters. The coffees are grouped by the region, allowing coffee enjoyers to investigate the subtleties between each of the growing regions.

Visit www.avlcoffee.com for more details about the event and to purchase your tickets today!

Fall Clean-Up Day 2016

It’s time for our annual fall Clean-Up Day. Friends of the Smith-McDowell House will gather from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm to spruce up Asheville’s oldest historic home.

After a busy summer of community events, we need your help to make the house shine! Outside activities include weeding, trimming, and general grounds care. If you’d prefer to work inside, we need volunteers to help clean artifacts and the building itself. As in years past, Corner Kitchen Catering will provide lunch to all volunteers. We continue to appreciate the Corner Kitchen’s support and know that we will all enjoy a wonderful meal. Visit them at http://www.cornerkitchencatering.com/

Schedule:
10:00 – 12:00 Cleaning, dusting, weeding, and pruning
12:00 – 12:30 Lunch is Served!
12:30 – 2:00 More cleaning, dusting, weeding, and pruning

Volunteers do not need to commit to the entire day. We encourage you to join us at your convenience. Please contact Jesse Edgerton, Smith-McDowell House manager and volunteer coordinator at jesse@wnchistory.org to sign up for a volunteer shift. The entire Smith-McDowell team looks forward to spending all or part of the day with its many supporters and volunteers. Together, our many hands will make light work!

Acorn Gathering

Come to the first Acorn Gathering on Lovin Land and have fun with this glorious food gifted to us in the autumn. Acorns have so much goodness and deliciousness to offer and they’re falling all around us!

Acorns served as the primary staple food across the northern hemisphere for millennia. They provide a complete protein, high-oleic mono-unsaturated fat, and vitamins and minerals. Unlike annual grains, their production and harvest fits seamlessly into a highly diverse and resilient forest ecosystem. Osker Glorious Forest will discuss everything they’ve learned about harvesting, storing, and processing this high quality staple food.

We’ll do some processing of acorns together (bring acorns you’ve harvested)

We’ll also do some cooking & preparing acorn treats with Amber Tree.

Osker and Amber manage Glorious Forest Farm in Madison county, where the goal is to re-establish humans as a responsible keystone species. This work involves deepening relationships with nutrient dense wild foods like hazelnut, acorn, hickory, and mullberry. It also includes domestic animals as a management tool, and a means for harvesting less edible wild plants and turning them into milk and meat.

We’ll be in the Black Walnut Grove at the top of the road. Please drive and park at the end of the road and walk into the area.

Carpooling highly encouraged.

Bring snacks to share. Bring acorns! Bring family, friends, kids.

Please leave dogs & squirrels at home 😉
