After Hours Hike: “Over 200 Years on the Trail”

Hiking, rambling, tramping, fellwalking. Call it what you will, walking in the woods has been a popular pastime across the world since the 1700’s, with hundreds of books, thousands of maps, and even a few movies dedicated to this activity. But what’s the attraction? Join us for an easy-to-moderate hike, approximately 2 miles round-trip, and find out!

Meet at the dirt pull-off on the northern end of the French Broad Bridge at Milepost 393.7. Wear long pants (for the poison ivy) and hiking shoes, bring some water, and be prepared for changeable weather.

Call (828) 298-5330, extension 304 for more information.

“My Way Matinee” Sensory Friendly Movie Screening

Second & Fourth Saturday Every Month

For many families, going to see a movie is an entertaining way to spend time together. But for kids with sensory challenges, the traditional movie experience can be overwhelming. Loud noises, bright lights, and strange smells can be stressful.

As part of the “My Way Matinee” program, the films are shown with brighter lighting, softer sound, and room to wiggle. Everyone is welcome to cry, sing, shout and dance!

March to commemorate the great flood of 1916

In Marshall, July 1916 the great flood invaded Marshall. It inundated all but three buildings, washed away as many as 53 homes, destroyed two bridges and ripped up large sections of the railway.

The water rose from a normal stage of about 2 feet to more than 20 feet in about 16 hours. It covered the railroad tracks 7 to 8 feet deep and covered Main Street 5 feet deep. It raced along at 5 feet per second on Main Street and 18 feet per second in the river channel.

In addition, to the destruction of property, Marshall lost two downtown business people: Altha Briggs and James Guthrie. Virginia Lapham, their family member, will be joining us for this memorial.

We will all congregate at the courthouse at 12 pm. When the clock begins to chime, for the noon hour, we will walk silently across to the middle of the bridge. After reflecting on the horror, that our town went through during this storm, we will throw flowers into the river. Tim Malone, President of the DMA, will be positioning a boat in the river for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, It will have a light shining the whole time to honor our town and the people lost.

We have a DMA working on putting tape on some buildings downtown so you can see with your own eyes how high the water was.

This memorial is one of many gatherings that will be taking place over this week end. On Sunday, The Depot will having a talk about the flood.

‘Magic, Mirth & Meaning’ Fundraiser Magic Show

The Vanishing Wheelchair Little Theatre is the permanent home of the 501(c)(3) non-profit public charity for people with disabilities, The Vanishing Wheelchair, Inc. The Little Theatre at 175 Weaverville Highway, Suite K, in Asheville is the venue for several magic and variety shows for the public and is available for private functions and parties. The monthly magic and variety show, “Magic, Mirth & Meaning,” is a family-friendly, hour-long production that features story tellers, singers, jugglers, and magicians.

.
The show “Magic, Mirth & Meaning” features numerous talents of people with disabilities and those who wish to help them. At any given show, an audience may see singing, story telling, and of course magic. The show appeared and disappeared for several years since the non-profit’s founding on November 24, 2010. On February 20, 2013 the show began appearing in Asheville on a monthly basis, finding its stride at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church.

.
The Vanishing Wheelchair has used the proceeds from the events it hosts to launch “All Things Possible” to teach skills in performing, painting, photography, music, crafts, writing, and wood working to people with disabilities. These workshops are available to other non-profits to share with their clientele and will be conducted at the 175 Weaverville Highway location. Eventually the non-profit wishes to expand to establish a universally accessible hands-on museum for children to explore the arts and sciences at which people with disabilities can work and continue to learn these skills.

.
Come support and see what The Vanishing Wheelchair is all about. Tickets may be available at the door, but advanced reservations are strongly encouraged since seating is limited. Purchase tickets here online, or contact Magic Central, 175 Weaverville Highway, Suite L, Asheville, North Carolina 28804, or call 828-645-2941.

Paddlefest 2018

Whether you’re a seasoned paddler, just getting started, or want to spend some time on the still waters of Lake Julian, grab some friends and head to Paddlefest. Try out the latest stand up paddleboards, whitewater kayaks, fishing kayaks, and recreational flat water boats for free. You’ll also have a chance to chat with industry experts about paddles, boating accessories, and the best spots in the region to get on the water this year.

In addition to fun on the water, enjoy some music, watch on-the-water skills demonstrations, learn outdoor skills at workshops and clinics, and play the newly-expanded disc golf course.

We’ll have PFDs for kids and adults, but you’ll move through the line much quicker if you show up with your own. Same goes with liability waivers. Our lawyers say you’ve got to sign one, so why not print it before arrival? Here’s the link: http://bit.ly/2oJqd6s
