Haywood Street visioning open house

Let’s dream big for Asheville’s so-called Pit of Despair. What would you like to do on the 1-acre Haywood Street site across from the U.S. Cellular Center and the Bascilica of St. Lawrence? The Asheville Design Center, which has been charged with leading a visioning process for the site, will host an open house, create a creative space where people can think beyond form. Instead, they’re asking people to begin with function: What do you want to DO there, not what do you want to SEE there.

There will be a 3D model of the property and other visual aids. People can put up sticky notes on a wall. They can also go out to the property and play a “Place Game.”

The Asheville Design Center will ask people to go out to Pritchard and Pack Square parks with surveys, to think about what works, what’s missing and how whatever happens on the Haywood Street property can complement the two existing parks in downtown.

So come on down. Get creative, share your ideas. Let’s make it a great place with lots of uses, inviting for a wide range of people. Don’t think about budget. Don’t think about what it looks like. Think about what you would like to do there.

The feedback will be compiled for the Haywood Street Advisory Team’s consideration.

Here is some background on the committee and the visioning process: http://bit.ly/1pnQI1u

Run for the Warriors 1 mile walk/run and 5K

FighterWithin is so happy to sponsor this event!

It’s no big secret that I support our military in every possible way and this event is to honor them.

As each year comes and goes, the generation of our veterans are slimming down. With each generation that passes, I personally have noticed a lack of respect and recognition that our veterans very much so deserve. They are becoming forgotten, under appreciated and our children are not being taught how valid these Warriors serve our community and what they have sacrificed for us to have freedom. In addition, our local VFW and American Legion members are decreasing.

This walk and 5K is a fun way to bring awareness to the situation and encourage new members to join the VFW and the American Legion. These memberships go so much further than what I believe our community thinks. They support a lot of charities, clubs, activities, and most importantly, Henderson County.

Race participants $25

Buncombe County Chautauqua 2016: American Adventures

June 20-23 at 7pm Nightly

American Adventures will be held June 20-23 in Ferguson Auditorium at A-B Tech in Asheville.  This year’s Buncombe County Chautauqua will present some wildly courageous and adventurous characters.  The Save Our Buncombe Chautauqua Committee presents Chautauqua 2016 with support from several friends of the library groups, community organizations and local businesses in Buncombe County and many interested individuals.

Monday, June 20 – Mark Twain

Music by Don Pedi

Samuel Clemens carefully cultivated an additional public persona.  He named him “Mark Twain,” and it was as Mark Twain that he had the greatest adventures of his life.

Mark Twain, portrayed by George Frein. George Frein is Mr. Chautauqua in Buncombe County and has appeared here for sixteen years as many historical characters, Mark Twain being the most requested.  Mr. Frein comes to us from Fort Worth, TX.

Tuesday, June 21 – Amelia Earhart

Music by The Magills

Thrust into fame in 1928 after becoming the first woman to cross the Atlantic by airplane, she used her celebrity to encourage other women to fly.  Constantly pushing at boundaries, she journeyed far beyond expectations.

Leslie Goddard is Amelia Earhart and a well-known Chautauquan and a repeat presenter at the Buncombe Chautauqua.  She holds a Ph.D. from Northwestern University is a former museum director and is from Chicago, IL.

Wednesday, June 22 – Matthew Henson

Music by Zoe and Cloyd

On April 6, 1909, Robert Peary, Matthew Henson, and four Eskimos, arrived at the North Pole.  Only Peary received the credit for the discovery.  This is a story of courageous men persevering against nature and journeying into the unknown.

Matthew Henson is portrayed by Keith Henley.  Keith Henley is a professional actor, historical interpreter, playwright, director and choreographer and is from Camden, NJ.

Thursday, June 23 – Wernher von Braun

Music by Cary Fridley

As a child in Germany, von Braun attached fireworks to his little red wagon.  In his twenties he headed Germany’s rocket development program.  By age sixty, working for the United States, he had landed a dozen men on the moon and brought them back.

Wernher von Braun is portrayed by Larry Bounds.  Larry Bounds is also a repeat performer, having appeared as Harry Houdini, Einstein, and Walt Disney in previous seasons and is from Greer, SC.

The Chautauqua format will be familiar to those who have attended in the past.  Each evening, a nationally acclaimed historical interpreter dressed in costume will bring the character to life through a first person monolog.  The audience will then have a chance to question the character, delving more deeply into the issues that have been raised.  The replies will be historically authentic, based on research using letters, diaries, journals, and published writings.  Finally, the interpreter will step out of character to discuss the subject and answer questions from a critical, modern perspective.

Please plan to join us each evening in our indoor venue, Ferguson Auditorium at A-B Tech. A musical program will begin each evening at 7pm preceding the speaker presentation:

Admission is $5 per night, tickets may be purchased at the door and ample free parking is available.

For more information, call Ed Sheary, 828-231-9273.

Join us for a hike to historic Catawba Falls in Old Fort, NC. This is a beautifully tiered set of falls, with a perfect wading pool at the bottom of the lower falls. Catawba Falls Trail is a 2.1 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail that is rated as moderate. It is full of beautifully picturesque mini cascades along the way, so there is never a dull moment. Dogs are also able to use this trail. Please bring your carriers and a picnic lunch, as we will stay, eat, and play at the base of the falls before heading back down. You may want to bring a towel or a change of clothes for the little ones. Confident little walkers are welcome! This is one of our favorites from last year and well worth the little drive!
