Annual Coon Dog Day & 5K/Fun Run

A close to 60 year tradition & historic celebration of dogs and their people, Coon Dog Day Festival on Main Street in Saluda. This annual festival celebrates the beloved breed of dog with music, food, a parade, and even the crowning of a Coon Dog Day King and Queen. AND rumor has it that the Oscar Meyer Frankmobile (formerly known as the Weinermobile) will be there from 9am-1pm and in the parade! 🌭🚗

Camp Celo Senior Sleepaway Summer Camp begins (11-12yrs)

Senior Camp (Ages 11-12)

Session 1 : Three Weeks : June 12-July 2 : $2250

Session 2 : Three Weeks : July 3-July 23 : $2250

Session 3: Three Weeks : July 24-Aug 13 : $2250

 

For over fifty years children have come to join us for the summer on our family farm in the mountains of Western North Carolina. In addition to farm chores campers go on hikes and campouts, swim in the South Toe river & other camp activities.

Junior Camp (Ages 7-10)

 

Session A : One Week : June 12-June 18 : $1050

Session B : Two Weeks : June 19 – July 2 : $1600

Session C : Three Weeks : July 3 – July 23 : $2100

2016 Peaceful Warrior Summer Camp (7-14+yrs)

This Summer, Shaman Hill invites children and teens to use the ancient wisdom practices of archery, horsemanship, meditation, and swordsmanship to develop the skill of meeting Life in a heart-centered way.

Hungarian archery, horses, medieval weapons, centering, artifacts, craft, and foam weapon Boffing with The Wandering Swordsman play into epic games of myth and history across our beautiful, 30+ acre learning center, 15 minutes down river from Asheville.

3 one week Sessions Available:

Mongol Week- June 20th-24th

This week we will travel to Mongolia to visit Ghengis Khan and the nomadic horse people of the Central Asian Steppe.  Mongols lives were intimately connected to their horses.  It is traditionally said that “A Mongol without a horse is like a bird without the wings.”  In addition to our standard offerings listed above, Mongol Week will specifically focus on all aspects of horsemanship and care.

Medieval Week – June 27th-July 1st

This week our journey will lead us back to the time of the armored knights of Europe.  These mounted warriors lived by a code of chivalry and were immortalized in the legends of King Arthur and of Robin Hood.  In addition to our standard offerings listed above, Medieval Week will include a study of European armor and the hands-on practice of leather work.

Samurai Week – July 4th-8th

This week we will be transported to ancient Japan and experience the world of the samurai.  These famed warriors were known for their mastery of the sword, archery and horsemanship, as well as, creative arts such as calligraphy, flower arranging and tea ceremony.  In addition to our standard offerings listed above, Samurai Week will also include an in-depth exploration of zen painting and calligraphy.

Fire Escape: Fire-Safety Summer Camp (Middle School Aged)

June 19-22, Monday-Thursday, 9am-2pm. FREE.

Fire Escape is a unique opportunity for middle school aged youth to gain an appreciation of fire and life safety issues, develop valuable skills used in search and rescue operations, increase team building skills, and become an advocate for safety. Activities at Fire Escape are highly interactive and hands-on in nature. Most activities are conducted in pairs or teams, in which the campers must work together and rely on each other to succeed. The nature of the activities and the locations where they are conducted require campers to follow explicit rules in order to ensure everyone’s safety.

Ages 11-13/Rising 6th-8th grades.
Space is limited to 30 youth.

FREE Summer Lunch for All School Aged Children

Buncombe County Schools will be offering their “Summer Feeding Program” at the community center from June 18 to August 17 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. They will be serving lunch from 12:30-1:15pm.

Summer Play Date Tuesday

Every Tuesday through the summer beginning June 14th from 10 to 11 am. And, it is FREE 🙂

We invite parents and children to join us for summer adventures together. We will have activities for children ages 2 to 8, but children of all ages are welcome!

WhoDunnit? Mystery Writing Summer Camp (Rising 4th-Rising 6th Grade)

What do great writers and great detectives have in common?  Find out at ‘Whodunnit,’ where you will hone your detective skills by analyzing alibis, sleuthing out clues, and – hopefully! – catching a culprit.  Writing activities exploring suspense and character will guide you in weaving a detective tale of your own.

Facilitated by Laura Boffa, children’s author, illustrator and teaching artist. This is her 5th summer with True Ink summer programs.

​’Flying Off The Page’ Writing Summer Camp (Rising 2nd-Rising 4th Grade)

This week, we will explore different styles of written word as well as ways to bring those stories beyond the lines of their notebook paper and into other art forms.  We will combine written poetry, perspective stories, and folktale with the art of comic creation and illustration, mixed media collage, and performance arts from slam to skits.  Campers will get to showcase their creative storytelling skills with a grand finale reading, performance, and art exhibition.
