Gender Creative Kids Play Group

Porch Light Counseling invites kids under 12 to the Gender Creative Kids Play Group. Gender creative kids color outside the lines of the gender box they were assigned at birth. They don’t listen when people say that girls can’t play with trucks and boys can’t wear tutus. If this sounds like your child, please join us to create a safe space where we can rewrite the rules together. The only requirement for attendance is respect for the other participants’ creativity. This group is free and registration is not required. This is not a drop-off group. Caregivers are expected to stay with their children for the duration of the group.

***Caregivers, if you are interested in helping coordinate a snack or an activity at this group, please contact Heather at 828-368-4633 or heather.branham@gmail.com.***

This location offers ample free parking; a private, fenced playground; access to all gender bathrooms and an indoor play space in case of rain. Please note the Land of the Sky UCC is located in the building previously occupied by Westminster Presbyterian and some of the nearby signage still directs you to Westminster.

Junior Forester Program (8-12yrs)

Thursdays, June 20th – August 8; 10:30am – 12:00pm (excluding July 4th)

The Junior Forest Ranger (JFR) program is an exciting way for young people to explore their national forests and grasslands. The JFR program uses Forest Service science and practices to encourage girls and boys ages 8-12 to enjoy and appreciate nature. Programs run weekly on Thursdays, June 13 – August 8, 10:30am – 12pm. Caregivers are not required to attend but are always welcome. The Cradle of Forestry in America heritage site is nestled in the Blue Ridge mountains and is a great place to enjoy nature education, hiking trails, and a day of family fun! Pre-registration is required and spaces are limited, call (828) 877-3130.

Program Info:
Each Thursday, Junior Foresters will investigate and explore the outdoors, learning about a range of topics from forestry, forest sciences, outdoor ethics and stewardship. Each child receives a Junior Forester booklet and badge upon taking the “Conservation Pledge” at the end of the program. Children can come to one or all eight programs! Parents with younger children can sign up for our Woodsy Owl’s Curiosity Club, ages 4-7 which takes place at the same time as the Jr. Forester program.

Program Fee:
The program costs $5 per child and $3 for any accompanying adult. Accompanying adults with a Friends of the Cradle Season Pass or federal pass such as America the Beautiful or Golden Age pass are free.

What To Bring:
Some light hiking may take place during these programs, so the following items are recommended for children and accompanying adults to wear and/or bring:
Sturdy, close-toed shoes
Small backpack
Sunscreen
Water bottle
Raincoat

Weekly themes for 2019: TBD

Reservations are required! Please call (828)877-3130 or stop by the Cradle of Forestry to register! Learn more at https://cradleofforestry.com/event/summer-junior-forester-2/all/.

The Big Run: Global Running Day

For the third year, Fleet Feet and Brooks will come together on June 3rd to host The Big Run. The annual nationwide 5K brings thousands of runners together on Global Running Day to do what we love most: run.

Why The Big Run?

Because running changes everything.

We want to bring running to more communities; we want more people to set goals and meet them; we want more people to experience that feeling of accomplishment as they cross the finish line.

And as always, there’ll be amazing medals for all finishers.

All results from certified, timed 5K races will funnel into a national leaderboard to determine the overall male and female winners as well as the fastest runners in each age group. Those winners will receive cash prizes.

But it’s not just about winning—we will also recognize other runners with unique awards, including:

Common Ground: Finish with the most common finish time for The Big Run, and we’ll enter you into a drawing for something BIG!
Middle of the Pack: We’ll recognize the male and female who finish in the exact middle of all The Big Run results.
Social Butterflies: We’ll thank the two people with the most-engaged social media posts from The Big Run with some pretty sweet prizes.

Include #thebigrun, @brooksrunning and @fleetfeetsports in the post to be eligible.
