Annual Asheville Goombay Festival

Goombay Celebration – “Bringing it Back to the Block”- September 20, 21, and 22

(Asheville, NC) – Goombay Celebration, with the theme of “Bringing it Back to the Block,” will be held on Market Street in downtown Asheville on Friday, September 20 from 5 pm -10 pm; Saturday, September 21 from 10 am – 10 pm; and Sunday, September 22 from 10 am – 5 pm. The free three-day event will feature all-local vendors and performers.

Goombay Celebration, which is a partnership between the YMI Cultural Center and the Just Folks Organization, will be held in place of the YMI’s annual Goombay Festival which will
return for it’s 40th Anniversary in 2020. The theme of “Bringing it Back to the Block” refers to the fact that Goombay Celebration will be held in the festival’s original location.

As one of the oldest (if not the oldest) African American cultural centers in the country, the YMI Cultural Center holds the history of Asheville’s Black community, while also
supporting and illuminating Black contributions being made today. “The Goombay Celebration will be community-centered,” says YMI Executive Director Dewana Little, “and
will highlight the immense amount of Black talent we have here in the city.”
Goombay Celebration partners are LEAF Community Arts, Garnet Prose + Projects, Asheville FM, and Bhramari Brewing Company. Bhramari recently released “Umquombothi,” a traditional African beer, in anticipation of Goombay Celebration. The beer was created with Rayburn Farms, a Black-owned farm, and Riverbend Malt.

Pop-Up Adventure Playground 2016 Kickoff

Asheville Adventure Play’s first Pop-Up Adventure Playground of 2016 will take place at YMCA Beaverdam, 201 Beaverdam Road in North Asheville, on Saturday, June 4 from 10 am to 4 pm. The event will take place rain or shine.

In addition to plenty of open space for kids of all ages to create, build and play with various materials, the YMCA Beaverdam Pop-Up Adventure Playground will include mud and water play areas. There will be a place to rinse off.

For the parents, a documentary on the Adventure Playground movement will be shown on a continuous loop. The Land (2015) is a 30-minute documentary film about the nature of play, risk and hazard set in The Land, a Welsh adventure playground.

For families interested in having lunch at the event, food trucks will be adjacent to the play and amphitheater area. There are picnic tables for those who want to bring their own food.

Parking will be on Kimberly Ave. next to the YMCA Beaverdam field and at Ira B. Jones Elementary.

The June 4 event will mark the first public appearance of the Asheville Adventure Play trailer. Funding from the Active Play Alliance and Be Active Kids has allowed the group to purchase an enclosed towable trailer. The trailer will be used to store and transport materials to promote the knowledge of active play and increase opportunities for active play in a variety of diverse communities and geographic locations.
