Wilma Dykeman Birthday Celebration

JOIN US as we celebrate with refreshments and a final report about public art for the River Arts District Transportation Improvement Project (RADTIP).

There will be river trivia! Plus live performances. And cake!

This free event is open to the public.

** About Wilma Dykeman **
Wilma Dykeman warned us all of pollution in the French Broad River in her 1955 book “The French Broad.” It was a clarion call to respect our natural world, issued seven years before Rachel Carson’s “Silent Spring,” and the first case ever made that clean water is good for the economy. Wilma also pioneered in the areas of civil rights, women’s rights (including birth control), Appalachian Studies, and GMO’s. She was born on May 20, 1920, just north of Asheville at the head of Beaverdam valley. She died in 2006 at the Keever Solace Center off Sweeten Creek Road. Between these Buncombe County bookends, she lived an extraordinary life filled with books and writing, learning and laughter, social debate and family nurture.

Barn Dance

Swing into Spring at Project HNG’s 2025 Barn Dance!

Dust off your boots and grab your dancing partner — Project HNG is hosting its Spring Barn Dance, and you won’t want to miss it! Join us for an evening of live music, square dancing, and good old-fashioned fun. Whether you’re a seasoned dancer or a first-timer, our caller will have everyone moving and grooving in no time!

But the fun doesn’t stop on the dance floor – we’ll also have a raffle and a live auction featuring fantastic prizes, most of which are donated by local businesses. All proceeds will help Project HNG work toward its mission to make farm and equine education accessible to all.

Come hungry, because the Garage BBQ food truck will be on site serving up tasty eats, and we’ll have craft beer from Whistle Hop to keep your spirits high. Plus, the Hickory Nut Gap Farm Store will be open for part of the evening, so you can browse and shop between dances.

Enjoy the springtime weather and join a community coming together for a meaningful cause. Kick up your heels on the dance floor, bid on amazing auction items, test your luck in the raffle, and treat yourself to fantastic food and drinks!

Adults: $20 at the door ($18 presale)
Kids: $10 at the door ($8 presale)
Kids 5 years and younger attend for free

70’s Disco Dance Party Cancer Benefit for Tami-Lu!

There will be alcohol sold at the bar but this is a family friendly event!

You all know her and love her…she’s that energetic spirit that sings, creates, dances, and makes people laugh hysterically! Asheville local Tami-Lu Barry was diagnosed with Stage 4b Cervical Cancer in September 2015. She had a full hysterectomy and endured 6 months of intensive chemotherapy. After this traumatizing experience and emotional hardship, Tami-Lu is not feeling as alive as we remember her. Now that she is in remission, our top priority is getting her back to her artistically expressive and confidently animated self and to keep this nasty Cancer from coming back! With your help we will be able to purchase prescriptions, supplements and vitamins, herbs, preventative integrative medication, and many other miscellaneous health items that will help her on her road to recovery and future Cancer prevention. Come help support her in this struggle and celebrate her life!
If you cannot make the event and would still like to donate to the fund go to www.youcaring.com/WeLoveYouTamiLu

5pm: Free Flow Band
The Free Flow Band members are the the guardians of funk, and an irresistible dance party that draws fans from across generations and social groups and if you ask their fans, they will tell you Free Flow is a dance band that doesn’t try to sound like anyone but Free Flow. Free Flow’s line up of musicians reads like a who’s who of the best funk bands ever to grace North Carolina: Kazual Collins, Lil’ Rog, Black Note, and LT. “Our mission is to get people on the dance floor,” the members of the Free Flow Band proclaimed during a recent interview, almost in unison. And if you’ve seen them perform, you know that they meet that mission, night after night.
-Ami Worthen, Mountain Xpress
