International Migratory Bird Day Celebration

Spring forests and fields are alive with song resulting from the bustle of migratory birds. Bird day celebrates their return from tropical winter homes to summer habitats in our NC mountains. Join the Cradle of Forestry in honoring this amazing annual phenomenon of nature.

Activities for the day include:

  • Games and activities
  • Guided walks

More info:

Begun in 1993, International Migratory Bird Day is an educational celebration which highlights this tremendous phenomenon. In addition, IMDB promotes a conservation theme each year. Bird migration is a spectacular event throughout the Americas. Almost 350 bird species travel hundreds of miles from non-breeding grounds in Latin America, Mexico and the Caribbean to nesting habitats in North America. During this journey birdwatchers can observe these travelers as they rest and feed along the way.

A variety of migratory birds rest and feed at the Cradle of Forestry before continuing north. Many others conclude their journey in the Blue Ridge Mountains to nest and raise their young. Along our hiking trails birders often see and hear black-throated blue warblers, hooded warblers, black and white warblers, northern parulas and blue headed vireos during this event. On occasion one may spot rare sightings such as the bright Blackburnian warbler or scarlet tanager. In 2016 roughly 28 species were heard and spotted during IMBD.

The USDA Forest Service is a sponsor of International Migratory Bird Day.

2018 honors the “Year of the Bird” and the centennial of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.

The Cradle will be offering a selection of guided bird walks and activities for children throughout the day. Carlton Burke with the Carolina Mountain Naturalists is offering a Live Raptor Program in the afternoon. A detailed schedule will be posted closer to event day.

General admission applies to this event.

Matt Tommey: Sculptural Basketry Demonstration & Display

“Grovewood Gallery will be hosting a demonstration and display by world-class sculptural basketry artist Matt Tommey on February 19 and 20 from 11am – 4pm. Tommey, who has a studio in Asheville’s River Arts District, has been creating sculptural art baskets since the mid-1990’s. Crafted from locally harvested bark, vines and branches, Tommey’s baskets reflect the rustic elegance of nature.

Tommey is a leader in the contemporary basketry movement, having served on the Board of Directors of the National Basketry Organization from 2011 – 2014. He also teaches basketry at guilds and esteemed craft schools across the country, including Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts and John C. Campbell Folk School. In 2011 Tommey was named an “American Artist Under 40” to watch by the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum.”

Demonstration by Houston Letter Carver Clark Kellogg

“Grovewood Gallery in Asheville will be hosting a demonstration and display by letter carver Clark Kellogg on February 19 and 20 from 11am – 4pm on both days. This event is free and open to the public.

ABOUT CLARK KELLOGG
Clark Kellogg is an artist from Houston, Texas who specializes in letter carving in wood. Letter carving has a long and rich history, but sadly today it is an almost forgotten art. Cutting letters by hand is a demanding process requiring skill and patience, but there is simply no substitute for the results that can be accomplished using a mallet, chisel, and gouge – there is a crispness and a subtlety that cannot be matched by machine. Kellogg studied letter carving under master carver Chris Pye and has been carving letters on commission and spec ever since. Some past lettering projects have included house numbers, dedications, awards, and signs. His work has appeared in Fine Woodworking, Woodworker West, and Letter Arts Review.”

Bryan Koontz: Still Life Painting Demonstration

Asheville artist Bryan Koontz will be at Grovewood Gallery demonstrating brushwork techniques in oils. Bryan strives to create art that draws people into what they are viewing – historic places; paths and fields; and expansive mountain vistas – or, with portrait or figure painting, the beauty of one’s visage developed by character. Bryan will have several finished original works for sale, along with fine art prints.

Opening Day Celebration: Old Time Plowing & Folkways

Opening Day at the Cradle of Forestry celebrates Appalachian heritage during the days of the Biltmore Forest School as well as early springtime in Pisgah National Forest.

What to Do:

During our Opening Day celebration you can:

  • Get hands-on with old time horse plowing
  • Mingle with living history volunteers who bring the Blue Ridge mountain culture to life
  • Listen to some old-timey music
  • Enjoy the paved and wheelchair accessible trails, discovery center, film, scavenger hunts, and more

Details about old time plowing:

David and Diane Burnette and their Percheron draft horses have been plowing our heritage vegetable garden for many years now, weather permitting. The Burnettes are skilled heritage agriculturalists who can be seen around western N.C. giving blacksmithing demonstrations, banjo playing, or making molasses. All ages will enjoy the chance to plow the old way with them!

Are you a regular visitor of the Cradle of Forestry in America? Purchase an annual membership in the gift shop for you or the family and receive free entrance (remember, Tuesdays are always free for everyone!) on daily or non-event days.
