First Saturday Bird Walk

“Bird walks are held at the sanctuary on the first Saturday of every month. From April to September, the walks begin at 8:00 am, and from October to March, they begin at 9:00 am. We meet at the gazebo on the south end of the lake.

EMAS manages this 8-acre wetland in north Asheville. In 1988, after raising over $400,000, we acquired the property to protect it from commercial development. A boardwalk allows visitors to observe birds and other wildlife in several different habitat types. In addition to providing habitat for a multitude of bird species, the sanctuary is home to many species of butterflies and dragonflies/damselflies.

If you plan to visit the sanctuary, we ask that you follow a few rules in order to help us preserve the area for birds and visitors:

Do not jog or run in the sanctuary, as it disturbs the birds and birders.

Do not litter.

Do not walk dogs or other pets within the sanctuary.

Do not feed the wildlife.

Enjoy the scenery and wildlife around you, and allow others to do the same!

5th Annual Asheville Wing War featuring Andrew Scotchie & The River Rats

“Selling out in just days, the Asheville Wing War has become a staple of the local food scene over the past 5 years. More than a dozen local restaurants are nominated via social media by area residents and the restaurants go on to compete in Asheville’s hottest food contest.

Slated to be the largest Asheville Wing War to date, more than 600 attendees are set to pack out the exhibition hall at the Crown Plaza Resort to eat wings, drink ice cold beer and vote for their favorite spicy hand-held chicken.

The wings are judged in two different categories: specialty and traditional, and are judged separately by local celebrity judges and by attendees choosing the People’s Choice Award.

How it Works:

A limited number of VIP tickets (includes a sample of all wings and unlimited beer) go on sale January 12

General Admission attendees are able to purchase wing samples from each of the restaurants”
