Swim Orienteering at Lake James

Come celebrate the end O Summer with us with a swim-run orienteering race on Saturday, September 7 at Lake James State Park.

Classic (point-to-point) orienteering that will involve wading across a narrow, waist-deep channel between a little island and the mainland, and/or swimming out to at least one control flag, lazily circling the island on Patrick McGillicutty ‘s pontoon boat. He will talk like a pirate all day, especially if you ask him to knock it off.

Start area is TBA, but probably near the main beach. We will begin on foot. Finish area will be on the island’s shore somewhere, where we will have a picnic, comparing finishing times with our toes in the sand.

A variety of courses will be available, from Beginner to Expert, and timing will be electronic.

If you are not a good swimmer, you must bring and wear a Personal Fl-O-tation Device. We may have kayaks or canoes or inner tubes or water wings or pool noodles.

– Cost will be $20 for soloists AND teams (subtract $5 if you have your own finger stick)
– If you are a group, you pay just $20 for your group (of up to four people) and includes 1 MAP AND 1 TIMING DEVICE
– $5 from every map goes towards the gas bill for Pat’s boat
– this event is kid and pet friendly (if they can hang)
– max attendance is 60 participants due to another large event at the park that day. 50 available tickets assumes 10 participants are family and teammates.

Jake Rush-O Super Ultra Sprint

WNC Orienteering Club is proud to present its craziest, fastest paced, most unique family-friendly navigation game yet – the JAKE RUSH-O SUPER ULTRA SPRINT!

Find checkpoints in the park with just a map… as fast as you can!

This is a BEGINNER, KID, and FAMILY-FRIENDLY scavenger hunt-type game that will challenge your mind and body in a unique and exciting way!

PICTURE THIS

Jake Rusher Park in South Asheville occupies just a couple of city blocks, is mostly an open, grassy field, and features a multi-level wooden playground structure in the middle.

There will be 20 checkpoints (orange and white flags) hung around the park, including the playground.

Runners will line up in corrals to be sent off THREE AT A TIME at 30 second intervals starting at 11am. Runners will get a detailed map with the flags to find IN ORDER using a supplied timing device. No navigation experience necessary!

The entire field will be on the course at the same time, zig zagging and dodging one another as everyone runs their respective courses. It will be PANDEM-O-NIUM.

When you finish your course, you can take a break and then begin your next course.

Runners will complete THREE short courses like this, each about 1km long and with increasingly complex navigation. Each course will include a MAZE to negotiate before completing each course.

The objective is to finish all three courses in as short a time as possible, your result being the sum total of your three elapsed times.

Mistakes are bound to happen in this hectic, crazy format, so instead of being disqualified for an error (as is the case in classic orienteering,) a TIME PENALTY will be assessed for each mis-punch.

The starts window will open at 11am and close at 12 noon, allowing the last competitor to start enough time to comfortably finish their courses before we close the course and announce results at 2pm.

Average finish times for the entire event will be in the 1 to 2 hour range, and you can expect to cover 2 to 3 miles.

This event is for runners, walkers, shufflers, moseyers, saunterers, lolligaggers and lumberers alike, so don’t think you have to be a “runner” to participate!

Timing and scoring will be electronic, featuring our brand new SPORTident e-punching system! Results will be provided instantly to each runner as a printed receipt, displayed in real time, and published to the web after the event.

Cost is just $20 for individuals and teams, and includes three course maps and electronic timing equipment. Be sure to register early, as we expect this event to sell out!

When it’s all over, we expect to pile into Rocky’s Hot Chicken Shack, just across the street, for post-race food and libations.

Come on down, bring the whole family, and experience this fun and unique navigation game! See y’all there!

The Jameson’s Joy Memorial Service Foundation was created to honor the life and legacy of an amazing 9-year-old boy by inspiring people to build and strengthen their communities through acts of kindness – just as he did.

Jameson Adair Courtine was born on September 6, 2009 in Raleigh, NC. Through his 9 ½ years on Earth, he brought pure joy to the hearts of many with his smiles, giggles, sense of humor, character and strong work ethic. In any room Jameson walked into, people smiled because they knew he was going to do something awesome and do it with a great attitude.

One of Jameson’s best qualities was his heart. Jameson showed love openly and was a great friend to many. He was often the first one to meet new classmates and help them get adjusted to a new classroom. Jameson was often times chosen by his teachers to mentor other students and friends, and he did so happily. He was chosen by his teachers at school and church to participate in extra challenges and studies that required a commitment that went above and beyond normal. He was friendly and outgoing, and volunteered happily in many places including church, nursing homes and his community.

Jameson passed away unexpectedly on February 27, 2019. His death left a large hole in his family and community. Jameson’s Joy took off immediately as one of his friends decided to perform random acts of kindness at school in Jameson’s name, and #jamesonsjoy quickly became a grassroots effort of performing widespread random acts of kindness in many communities around the world. The Jameson’s Joy Memorial Service Foundation was quickly born from this movement.

While on Earth, Jameson began a legacy that has already touched hundreds of people in a positive way. It is our hope to keep this legacy alive in Jameson’s honor. Jameson’s Joy hopes to accomplish the following:
-build a ninja park to promote physical fitness in his town
-provide mentors to children who need positive adult role models
-provide community libraries to encourage children to read
-connect fathers to their children through reading and other programs
-inspire people to perform random acts of kindness
-shine the light of Jesus as Jameson did every day he lived

Your generous support is greatly appreciated.

To learn more about Jameson’s Joy or make a donation, visit www.jamesonsjoy.org and follow Jameson’s Joy on social networks.
