Immersive Yourself in Bob Moog’s Legacy and the Science of Sound

Open Daily, 11:00am-5:00pm, except for major holidays

Our facility celebrates the extraordinary legacy of synthesizer pioneer Robert Moog, whose invention of the Moog synthesizer in 1964 helped revolutionize the face of music. The Moogseum brings Bob’s complex life and career to life through experiential exhibits for the aficionado and lay person alike; His story is one of the spirit of American innovation. Come explore theremins and synthesizers, learn how electricity turns into sound, discover over 100 years of electronic music history, and delve into Bob’s world through a re-creation of his workbench.

The Moogseum is the convergence of the Foundation’s goals of educating and inspiring people through electronic music, just as Bob did himself. It serves as a educational, historical, and cultural resource to Western North Carolina and the worldwide electronic music community through the following experiences:

  • Interactive exhibits that allow people to explore and discover the science behind the sound of electronic music, replete with bays of synthesizers, theremins, and effect pedals from a variety of manufacturers.
  • An interactive timeline of the life and work of Bob Moog and the many people who inspired him and with whom he collaborated
  • An archival center where rare documents, including project notes, articles, photos and schematics from the Bob Moog Foundation Archives, can be viewed on an interactive LED screen
  • A Young Inventors Lab where children will be inspired to explore electronic music and create their own circuit board
  • A rotating exhibit space which highlights new innovations in musical instrument interface as well as shared exhibits from other museums
  • Traveling exhibits which will allow us to share our innovative work with other facilities nationally and internationally
  • An online Moogseum that will allow us to share our unique resources with the world.

The Grey Eagle Tavern and Music Hall was first located in Black Mountain, North Carolina. Its name came from the old Cherokee name for that region and the original name of the town. Originally housed in 1994 in a former garage and paint room of a former Chevrolet dealership, The Grey Eagle became one of those comfortable neighborhood bars, hosting local musicians and some touring songwriters.

In the fall of 1998, The Grey Eagle bid farewell to Black Mountain with a momentous Halloween show and moved a scant 12 miles away with a beautiful new venue by the French Board River in historic Asheville. June 11, 1999 saw the inaugural show from an old friend, David LaMotte.

Today the Grey Eagle is Asheville’s longest-running all-ages venue and has hosted over 10,000 different bands and artists including Ralph Stanley, Avett Brothers, Band of Horses, Richie Havens, Frank Black, Deen Ween, Lake Street Dive, Slick Rick, Nathaniel Rateliff, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Budos Band, Darrell Scott, and many more. Equally impressive is the long list of local talents performing in a setting featuring a large dance floor, relaxing patio area, and one of the best sound systems in Asheville. The performance room boasts an intimate stage with options for seated shows, 2 flat-screen TVs and projector. To complete the hospitable atmosphere is an in-house Taqueria featuring original and creative meals and an ever-expanding beer selection.

The Grey Eagle continues to garner local and national acclaim. The intimacy of the stage offers a personal experience between the musicians and the audience. In March, David Dye hosted the NPR series World Cafe’s “Sense of Place” show at The Grey Eagle. For these and other reasons The Grey Eagle was voted by touring musicians as one of the nation’s top 25 live music venues and in 2016, by Garden and Gun magazine, as one of “Ten Must-See Music Venues in the Southeast.”
