Operation Backpack (McDowell County School Students)

This school year will be Operation Backpack’s 20th year assisting students with school supplies. School supplies will be available for McDowell County School students of all ages at the MAI/AEC GYM, Monday – Thursday from 9:00 am until 4:00 pm July 30th thru August 14th.

Supplies will only be available at the MAI/AEC Gym on these days. If you are unable to come during summer distribution, please see the school counselor, principal, or a teacher once school begins to request supplies.

From 1 student in 1998 to 989 students last summer. This assistance was only possible because of our giving and caring community!

Our WBRM Remote will be at WalMart on Thursday, August 2nd; 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm Please come out and Help us FILL the Bus!!

Supplies and monetary donations are very much appreciated and needed!
Monetary and supply donations are accepted year-round at McDowell County Schools, 334 South Main Street, Marion, NC 28752. Checks can be made to The Endowment Fund and indicated for “Operation Backpack”.

Best of WNC 2023 Party

Mountain Xpress will be hosting their annual Best of WNC party at the Meadow in Highland Brewing Co. This is a free, non-ticketed event that is family friendly and will feature live music from Ashley Heath, Firecracker Jazz Band and DJ Lil Meow Meow. Food trucks will also be available on site.

National Night Out w/ Asheville Police Department

National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support for and participation in local anti-crime programs, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships, as well as send a message to criminals, letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Residents throughout the City of Asheville and across the nation are asked to turn on their porch lights, lock their doors, and spend the evening outside with neighbors and law enforcement to help build stronger police partnerships and neighborhood unity in our fight for a safer community.
We encourage our residents to continue to be our eyes and ears in the community. If you see something, say something.

Drag Queen Story Hour

Beauty Bar AVL and Spellbound Children’s Bookshop are excited to host another Drag Queen Story Hour at Beauty Bar! Spellbound will be selecting the stories and setting up a pop up store at the salon and our friend Euphoria will be the reader. We’ll have a couple of dance breaks, too!

Drag Queen Story Hour (DQSH) is just what it sounds like—a drag queen reading stories to children. DQSH captures the imagination and play of the gender fluidity of childhood and gives kids glamorous, positive, and unabashedly queer role models. In spaces like this, kids are able to see people who defy rigid gender restrictions and imagine a world where people can present as they wish, where dress up is real.

All ages welcome. Free!

Customer & Community Appreciation Day in Asheville

Blossman Gas in Asheville is holding their annual Customer & Community Appreciation Day! There will be gas appliance vendors, 15% discount on appliance purchases, and door prizes including two grand prizes – a Broil King BBQ grill & a Rinnai water heater benefiting Meals on Wheels of Asheville & Buncombe Co., Inc.

Plus, there will be food and refreshments, a dunking booth, and a giant slide for the kids! Don’t worry parents, we have you covered too with games of corn hole. Fun for the entire family!

One Fish Two Fish Children’s Consignment Event

It’s that time again! We’re back for our spring event! This year we are located at the Asheville Outlets between GNC and Game Outlet.

Hours for the public sale will be:
Friday 3/8 10am-9pm
Saturday 3/9 10am-9pm
Sunday 11am-6pm 1/2 off day and all items marked “Donate” will be just $1 from 4-6pm

If you don’t know Consignment your about to be hooked!

Consignment is easy! You earn 70% and get to shop before the public at our private Volunteer and Consignor pre sale.

Use our easy on-line system to enter items, price and print your tags, then just hang and drop off and watch them sell 🙂 then pick up any unsold items and your check after the sale. It’s that easy.

Receive your check the day of pickup. There is a $7 Consignor fee to participate that gets deducted from your earnings but if u choose to volunteer at least one shift or help us advertise you get that back.

If you don’t want to consign, come SHOP! You will find lots of bargains on quality, gently used baby and kid items. And you will save 30-90% off retail prices.

This is your one stop shop for all your baby and kids’ clothing, toys, furniture, movies, bedding, books, baby gear and much more!

Princess Glitter Spa Makeover Party

Come get pampered by a princess and get the royal treatment with Magic Face Masks, Glitter Manicures, Princess Glitter Makeovers, Raffles, Glitter Tattoos, Runway Show, and Professional Photos with our Mermaid princess. These makeovers are professional with 2 onsite licensed cosmetologists that follow all health and safety regulations.

Great for ages 2 to 10. Wear your favorite princess dress or sparkly dress. Keep in mind we will have a runway show and photos with our Mermaid Princess at the end. There will be water, lemonade and cookies. Come close out the summer season in the most magical way!

Ticket is for 1 child and includes FREE admission for accompanying adult. Additional adults will need to purchase a ticket. This is a true VIP event as we are only selling 20 tickets.

Engaged Asheville is located in Reynold’s Village just past the YMCA.

Weaving – Family Fiber Workshop

Weaving 101- learn the basics of weaving (including the construction of a simple cardboard loom). Though geared towards families or those with little ones to learn together, all are welcome to attend this casual workshop.

$7-14 sliding scale / child, no one will be turned away for lack of funds. No pre-registration required, cash or card accepted at the door.

Drop in anytime between 10am and 4:30pm, expect to stay for about 45 minutes give or take.

Once in the building take the hall to the left, we’re just a couple doors down across from the large exhibition space

If possible: bring some extra cardboard for loom building just in case, and if you have any particularly inspiring yarn or found material that we can experiment with weaving in.
