Author Event: Lester Laminack and The King of Bees

Join us at The Hop for a free event with author Lester Laminack. He’ll read from his new picture book The King of Bees and answer questions and sign books.

Henry can’t wait until he can have a bee suit of his own so he can help his Aunt Lilla with the sister bees. Day after day as Henry observes his Aunt Lilla work with the beehives on their Lowcountry farm, he becomes fascinated with her bee suit and her ability to communicate with the bees. When he learns that the bees are getting ready to look for a new place to live, he tries to find a way to communicate with the sister bees to convince them to stay. An author’s note includes additional information about bees and bee conservation.

Lester L. Laminack is a specialist in children’s literacy and professor emeritus at Western Carolina University. Laminack has written numerous books and articles for educators and is a familiar speaker at professional meetings and reading associations nationwide.

No purchase required, but you can reserve a copy now for $17.95 by following the Ticket link. If you can’t make it to the event but would like a signed copy, mention that in the comment section at checkout.

Lyrid meteor shower!

Earth Day will bring one of the best meteor showers of the spring with as many as 20 meteors streaking across the sky every hour.

“The Lyrid meteor shower will be the first significant meteor shower in a few months,” AccuWeather Astronomy Blogger Dave Samuhel said, noting that it will be the best display since January.

The best night to see the Lyrids will be the night of Saturday, April 21, into the early morning of Sunday, April 22, although some meteors will be able to be seen on the night before and the night after the shower’s peak.

When and where to look

Viewing this weekend’s meteor shower will be easy for stargazers of all ages and will not require the use of binoculars or a telescope.

“The shower will be best viewed after midnight when the radiant is highest in the sky. “ Samuhel said.

The radiant point is the area in the sky from which the meteors originate. This weekend’s shower will radiate from east-northeast near the Lyra constellation, which is how the shower earned its name.

However, meteors will be visible streaking across all areas of the sky, not just to the east-northeast.

“Lay back and get as much of the sky in your view as possible, and just wait,” Samuhel said.

Some people spending a night under the stars to view the meteors may even see a few fireballs, or extremely bright meteors that can light up the entire sky for a few seconds.

MOM and KIDS Earth Day Camping Overnight

Let’s celebrate Earth Day together!

Time for the mommies out there to come out of the woodwork and enjoy a night camping with your babes! We will be camping in the campground. Hopefully, it will be warm enough that the kiddos can play in the water a bit and explore so please bring a towel. Come have fun…. this is just a casual event for MOMS and KIDS to meet!

This will only be for one night. We can meet each other and explore the local trails. For those who are brave, you can go up to John Rock for the sunset!

As always this is a “LEAVE NO TRACE” practice, so the less trash we make, the better. If you can bring your own flatware and plates that would be AMAZING, otherwise we will have plates, cups, and utensils.

Girl Scouts Interest Night: east Asheville

Do you have a girl interested in becoming a Girl Scout? Does she want to travel, learn new hobbies & skills, make friends, and see & do things she may have never had the chance to do before?

Come to St. John’s Episcopal Church (Old Haw Creek Road) on Thursday, April 19 to learn more about getting her involved in Girl Scouts. There are many ways to participate: camp, troop, individually and/or through programs. We will work to form new troop(s) serving east Asheville girls by finding adult volunteers who want to help her grow and develop.

Girl Scouts is for girls K-12 and current Girl Scouts will be leading fun activities for interested girls during this informational meeting.

For more information, send me an email at msmith@girlscoutsp2p.org.
