GWC Edible Park Maintenance Day
Love fruit? Love free fruit? Come by the George Washington Carver Edible Park to help with some annual maintenance, and take home all the apples you can find!
Those of you familiar with the park can be helpful with the planned removal of invasives and tree maintenance. If you’ve never been there, you’re in for a treat! We will meet at the park and begin work at 9am, each of us working as long as we feel comfortable with it.
Please bring your own tools: round-head shovels, trowels, pruners, loppers, gloves…whatever you typically use in your own gardens. Water and snacks are also recommended as needed, mosquito repellent if mozzies find you tasty. (A new Repel brand spray made with eucalyptus and lemon oil works fabulously!). Bathrooms in the adjacent Stephens Lee Rec Center will be available for our use.
In 1997, Carver Edible Park was built out of a trash pile less than a mile from the center of Asheville. Designed using permaculture principles, it features over forty fruit and nut trees, vines, and shrubs. Carver Park has been featured in The New York Times, The Huffington Post, Plough to Pantry, Tasting Table’s National Edition and other major media outlets because it is the first public forest garden in the country.

Lucky 13th Anniversary & Halloween Party
“13” could be a lucky number for you as Spellbound Children’s Bookshop jointly celebrates 13 years in business and Halloween on Saturday, October 28, from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. It’s always cause to celebrate when an independent bookstore is going strong for 13 years.
There will be an all-ages costume contest with prizes, free face painting, a story time with spooky crafts for ages 4-8, and other games with prizes. (Costume judging is at 3:15, story time at 3:30 p.m.)
For those a little more media savvy, post your party pictures on social media with the hashtag #Spellbound13 and you’ll be entered to win a $13 gift certificate.
Spellbound officially opened its doors on October 25, 2004. The store spent its early years first on Haywood Road in West Asheville, then in downtown. It’s now happily entering its teen years in North Asheville, surrounded by other kid-friendly businesses at the Merrimon Square Shopping Center. Spellbound is an independent bookstore, locally owned and operated. It’s the only bookstore just for kids and teens in Asheville.

Revolting Rhymes – Art House Theater Day
The Grail Moviehouse is proud to present an exclusive screening of
Roald Dahl’s REVOLTING RHYMES as part of
ART HOUSE THEATER DAY
Sunday, September 24 at 1PM
All Tickets for this Show are $5
MORE ABOUT REVOLTING RHYMES:
Based on the much-loved children’s book written by Roald Dahl and illustrated by Quentin Blake, Revolting Rhymes takes the classic fairy tales of Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White, The Three Little Pigs, Jack & the Beanstalk and Cinderella, then mixes them together and serves them with a mischievous twist.
The first film sees young Snow White and Red Riding Hood become lifelong friends as Snow White takes on the might of the wicked Queen, whilst Red is called home to deal with a pair of hungry wolves – one who’s eaten her grandma and then dressed in her clothes, while the other can’t help himself from eating some unsuspecting pigs. In the second film Jack grows up with his heart set on next-door neighbour Cindy. She has her eye turned by the eligible Prince at the ball, and Jack gets distracted by a giant beanstalk at the bottom of his garden. Will they find true love? Overarching both films, our narrator, a big bad wolf, has all the answers as well as a story of his own to tell.
All tickets $5 for Revolting Rhymes or a day pass for all 5 movies shown on AHTD can be purchased at the box office for $25
