LIVE Feed of the Eclipse

On Monday, August 21, 2017 North America will be treated to an eclipse of the sun. Anyone within the path of totality can see one of nature’s most awe inspiring sights – a total solar eclipse. This path, where the moon will completely cover the sun, will stretch from Salem, Oregon to Charleston, South Carolina; and includes several communities in Western North Carolina! Observers outside this path will still see a partial solar eclipse where the moon covers part of the sun’s disk. In any given location on Earth, a total eclipse happens only once every hundred years or so, making this a once in a lifetime opportunity.

On Monday, August 21st starting at 10 am we will be doing a live feed of the eclipse for viewers wishing to witness the incredible event from the comfort of our air conditioned community room. Refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Fairview Library, and the live feed will last until about 4 pm.

The only safe way to look directly at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed sun is through special-purpose solar filters, such as “eclipse glasses”. Beginning in August, the Fairview Library will be giving out eclipse glasses (until supplies last) for any excited observers out there!

Through the music, costumes, puppetry, dance and magic, the audience will be taken on a magical journey into the Japanese culture. Shozo has been described as Cirque du Soleil meets Bill Nye The Science Guy. Arem portrays a silent character making new and cool discoveries throughout the performance. “Shozo” doesn’t have any meaning one would find in the dictionary, but Arem says he likes for it to mean using your imagination. “I just like the sound of the word basically,” he says.

Arem has performed the show in Tokyo and Los Angeles, and he’s adding some new material specifically for this performance at The Altamont. Having portrayed such characters as Ronald McDonald, Mac Tonight and Striker, the mascot of World Cup Soccer, Arem has a successful background in live performance. One of his distinctive and original characters is T-Bone, a persona Arem created to get children excited about physical activity.

Arem helped establish David Copperfield’s Project Magic at the Los Angeles Children’s Hospital and has performed with Harry Blackstone Jr. He is celebrated internationally with performing tours of Nepal, Thailand, Canada, Japan, Israel and Ireland. In the United States he has been featured In the Los Angeles Times and on Late Night with David Letterman, ESPN, NBC, and ABC network programs.

Through his lifelong fascination with Japan combined with his extensive history in live performance, Arem hopes audiences of Shozo will be taken on an adventure into a world they have not experienced before. Arem says his favorite quote about Shozo comes from an entertainer friend who has attended shows and performed for more than 30 years. “I’ve not seen 80 percent of what you did in your show in any performances I’ve seen.”

Total Solar Eclipse

Via Astronomy Club of Asheville:

While all of North America will experience a partial solar eclipse on the afternoon of Monday, August 21st, only those under the eclipse’s “path of totality” – the Moon’s 70-mile wide shadow as it sweeps across the Earth from Oregon to South Carolina – will see a total solar eclipse. Asheville is not under this path and therefore will not see totality.

Check out this helpful interactive path of totality map: https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/sites/default/files/interactive_map/index.html

And to learn more about why you should travel to the path of totality, visit the Astronomy Club of Asheville’s page dedicated to the Great American Eclipse here: http://www.astroasheville.org/2017-total-solar-eclipse/
