ACS students in grades kindergarten through twelfth have been working hard, with the support of their teachers, to display their artwork for the world to see! The Opening Reception for the Art Show took place on Sunday, April 23, with light refreshments and celebration. Visit the show, free to the public, until May 2nd downtown at the Young Men’s Institute Building (39 South Market Street). Viewing hours are Tues-Friday from 12:00 – 4:00 pm. Come and see the talent we have here in our district!
We’re inviting the community to join April 30th from 5-7:00 p.m. at Asheville Middle School. Green Opportunities will provide a free meal. We will have fun activities and resources available for the whole family to enjoy together as we get ready to gear up for summer! We hope to see you there!
Held on Saturday, April 29, from 12 – 5 p.m. and Sunday, April 30, from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m., and presented by the American Rhododendron Society, SE Chapter, this yearly judged event features hundreds of Rhododendron and Azalea blooms. The North Carolina Arboretum is home to the National Native Azalea Collection, and visitors are encouraged to explore the collection, located along Bent Creek.
Join us for a special trail walk down to the Arboretum’s National Native Azalea Collection on Saturday, April 29 and Sunday, April 30 starting at 1 p.m. from the Baker Exhibit Center lobby. Trained volunteer guides will lead participants on a 2.5 mile walk and discuss the collection, which represents nearly all of the native azalea species in the U.S. The walk is free, however, donations to The North Carolina Arboretum Society are welcomed. Due to the length of the walk, participants are asked to wear appropriate hiking attire.
Drop by for Zumba-Thon on Friday, April 28th from 6-9pm at Reuter for a chance to dance the night away.
This event is open to YMCA Members and Non-Members with a donation to support our Annual Campaign. Grab a pledge card and join our instructors for three hours of fun!
Each week of summer camp will be 5 days of mixed-age play-based connection education and exploration for children ages 3-8, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. We will meet on school land just off of Town Mountain (10 minutes from the Charlotte St exit off I-240) and possibly another location as well.
We will sing songs, tell stories, move our bodies, develop relationships with local plants and animals, cultivate silence and awareness, forage for edible foods, create art, work with simple tools, and learn how to relate to each other and our living world with respect and kindness.
Our days are structured in a daily rhythm of in-breath (quieter, fine-motor movement) and out-breath (gross motor movement, plenty of free play.) The daily and weekly rhythms (activities and locations) will be consistent across each week offered. Within the consistent framework, each week will be different in subtle ways based on variations such as which flora are in bloom.

Hendersonville Tree Board Announces the Annual Arbor Day Event on Friday, May 5, which will Involve Students from Mountain Community School
School children at Mountain Community School will join Arbor Day officials and the public at this year’s Arbor Day celebration on Friday, May 5, at 12:15 p.m. The Arbor Day Celebration will occur at A Pet’s Own Place Dog Park on Seventh Avenue East, Hendersonville, where a new tree will be planted and North Carolina Forest Service personnel will present awards. Hendersonville Mayor Barbara Volk will attend and officially proclaim May 5 as Tree City Day in Hendersonville, and a red oak will be planted to provide shelter and shade at the park. The event is hosted by Four Seasons Rotary Club, which has sponsored Arbor Day events for over 15 years. The community is invited to attend.
The students will present a special program focusing on trees and their important service to the community. A ranger with the N.C. Forest Service will declare the City of Hendersonville a Tree City USA, the City will be given a Growth Award as well, and a Tree City flag will be presented.
“We are proud of the efforts in our town to preserve, protect, and plant trees,” said Dr. Jim Volk, coordinator of the program for Four Seasons Rotary. “We organize the local Arbor Day program to enable school children and the community to celebrate those efforts. Everyone is invited to attend this brief but important event.”
Arbor Day events are held around the country and the world throughout the year. Communities achieve Tree City USA status by meeting certain standards of sound urban forestry management: maintaining a tree board or department, having a community tree ordinance, spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry, and celebrating Arbor Day.
2017 marks the 41st Anniversary of the Arbor Day Foundation’s Tree City USA program, and Hendersonville is celebrating 26 years as a Tree City USA, recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of its commitment to effective urban forest management. The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters.
The Tree City USA Growth Award is given by the Arbor Day Foundation to recognize higher levels of tree care by participating Tree City USA communities. The Growth Award highlights cities and towns that have innovative tree programs and projects, increased commitment and resources for urban forestry, and have partnered on new ideas and successes. This will be the 19th year that Hendersonville has received a Growth Award.
In addition, Hendersonville is one of only 14 Sterling Tree City USA communities in North Carolina. Sterling Communities are regarded by the Arbor Day Foundation as leaders in community forestry and are often looked upon as innovators.
For more information about the Arbor Day celebration, phone Arbor Day Coordinator Dr. James Volk at 693-5692.
