Children’s Author Holly Myers presents Goodnight Asheville

We’re so excited to have local author and illustrator Holly Myers with us to read from her children’s book: Goodnight Asheville. This is a beautiful picture book filled with bright illustrations of our city’s favorite attractions, museums, historial landmarks, and other points of interest. There is even a key in the back to learn a bit more about each of these places if you want to take a deeper dive. This is one of our favorite local books and we can’t wait to celebrate with Holly!

Children’s Illustrator Katie Kath presents My Kicks!

Bring your family and join us at 11am for this children’s book illustrator as she presents this exciting new picture book all about your shoes!! We’ll also be doing super fun CRAFTS and we’ve heard there might even be some tasty TREATS!

Here’s a bit more about the book:

Boys love sneakers. But when a child finds that his toes have outgrown his favorite shoes, and they’ve gotten too dirty and smelly, his mom says it’s time for a new pair. Resistant to let go, the boy reminisces about all the good times he’s had with his favorite kicks on the city streets. There’s the paint splatter from his masterpiece and the drip from a Popsicle. There’s the scuff from when he fell off his skateboard. And there are those frayed laces that he learned to tie in bows and doubles. A new pair just won’t be the same. But, with bigger shoes to fill, the boy realizes new adventures await him. Maybe he could paint a little better? Or skate a little faster? This new picture book from the bestselling author of I Am Yoga explores the love and pride that kids have for their sneakers and the joy that can be found in growing up, growing out, and moving on.

Illustrator Katie Kath has a master’s degree in illustration from Savannah College of Art and Design. She is the illustrator of What a Beautiful Morning.

Children’s Book Week Celebration!

This year marks the 98th anniversary of the weeklong celebration of books for young readers known as Children’s Book Week, May 1-7. The tradition dates back to 1919, and is the longest-running national literacy initiative in the country. Every year, events are held nationwide at schools, libraries, bookstores, homes — wherever young readers and books connect. Malaprop’s is highlighting the 2017 festivities with two rollicking events. Match literary wits with your fellow children’s lit book lovers at Kid Lit Trivia Night on Friday May 5 from 6-8 pm. On Saturday, May 6, from 1-4 p.m. join us for a middle grade and young adult fan party with local authors as we launch a new program, First Reads for tweens and teens! First Reads offers a free galley copy of an upcoming book to kids in exchange for a 100-word review. Come for the bookish fun and prizes but stick around for cupcakes and the chance to support local literacy.

When Jyn Erso was five years old, her mother was murdered and her father taken from her to serve the Empire. But despite the loss of her parents she is not completely alone-Saw Gerrera, a man willing to go to any extremes necessary in order to resist Imperial tyranny, takes her in as his own, and gives her not only a home but all the abilities and resources she needs to become a rebel herself.
Jyn dedicates herself to the cause-and the man. But fighting alongside Saw and his people brings with it danger and the question of just how far Jyn is willing to go as one of Saw’s soldiers. When she faces an unthinkable betrayal that shatters her world, Jyn will have to pull the pieces of herself back together and figure out what she truly believes in… and who she can really trust.
