Afterschool Science Program: Bats! Our Bug-eating Friends
Bats sometimes get a bad rap, but these fascinating nocturnal creatures are an important part of our ecosystem. In addition to being excellent pollinators, bats are the only major predator of night-flying insects. A single bat eats thousands of insects each night, including pesky mosquitoes and gnats that literally drive us batty.
Learn more about these beneficial flying mammals from Carol Whittemore and Carolyn Cole of the International Bat Conservancy, including how we can promote bat habitat and provide shelter for bats in our own backyards. You may even have a chance to help build a bat house!
