BBQ and Bluegrass an Appalachian Friendship Dinner

Join Folkmoot at the Elevated Mountain Distilling Company in Maggie Valley for Barbeque and Bluegrass an Appalachian Friendship Dinner, April 14 from 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm.

The Appalachian dinner will feature pulled pork, baked beans, coleslaw, dinner rolls and dessert. Musical guests are Americana string band, Ol’ Dirty Bathtub. “Moonshine,” quite naturally, will be offered by Elevated Mountain Distilling Company and beer by BearWaters Brewing Company.

Elevated Mountain Distilling Company is a craft distiller of top-shelf whiskeys and spirits. Located in the heart of Maggie Valley, at 3732 Soco Road, Elevated Mountain Distillery chose its name as a reflection of the fact that Haywood County has the highest average median elevation of any county east of the Rockies.

Tickets for this Friendship Dinner are $25 for adult, $20 for students and $30 at the door. Tickets can be purchased at Folkmoot.org or by calling 828-452-2997. Seating is limited, so advance purchase is advised.

Folkmoot’s year-round programming initiatives have been made possible by Haywood Regional Medical Center, the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina and the Cherokee Preservation Foundation.

Folkmoot is a nonprofit organization dedicated to celebrating many cultures in one community. The Folkmoot Friendship Center is located in the Historic Hazelwood School at 112 Virginia Avenue in Waynesville. Staff can be reached by phone at (828) 452-2997 or by email at info@folkmoot.org.

The Nile Project

A collaboration with universities across the state will bring music from 11 east African countries – all connected by the Nile River – to North Carolina for a series of musical celebrations. One such collaboration, between The Nile & African Identity, Discussion and Music Demonstration with Western Carolina University (WCU) will take place on March 13 from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m at the Folkmoot Friendship Center in Waynesville.

The Nile Project features artists who develop new songs drawn from the rich diversity of one of the oldest places on earth. It uses musical collaboration to inspire, inform, and connect Nile citizens. Instruments from the Nile’s sources in East Africa and Ethiopia as well as from the deltas in Sudan And Egypt come together creating new musical styles, supporting vocals in more than ten languages.

The Nile Project was described by The New York Times as “a committed, euphoric international coalition” and National Public Radio named The Nile Project’s debut recording one of five “must hear international albums”. The morning event will explore the ways varying definitions of being “African” have affected Nile history. It will also draw from examples of how the world music industry portrays African identity and share how The Nile Project represents a departure from traditionally exported African music. This event is free for WCU students, $3 for Haywood County School Students and $5 for the general public.

✧✧A HUGE thank you to all of the participants who are sharing their gifts in support of this mission. We LOVE you!!✧✧

We are beyond honored and thrilled that the community has supported the growth of Harmonia to the place that it is now.

✻Our Story✻
When we first started out on this mission, we had no resources but our creative innovation, our hands, and the things we could borrow and source for free. We loaded down our personal vehicles with loaned canopies, random fabrics, and air mattresses and road tripped to festivals across the southeast. We believed in the importance of our mission, and we pushed ourselves in ways we didn’t know were possible to bring this dream to fruition. Our inherently compassionate team overcame many obstacles, pushing themselves through long weeks of minimum sleep to make this vision a reality. The most beautiful thing about this mission is that all of this is done with the comfort and safety of others completely at the forefront.

Now in year three, we have seen the community rise up in support of our mission of providing compassionate care to the music scene. The support we have received through family, friends, colleagues, event staff, event producers, sympathizers and supporters from every corner of the scene, has been overwhelmingly amazing and has allowed this idea and concept to flourish into the operation that it currently is now.

In the past 2 years, we have been able to raise funds that have purchased the beautiful structure and its decor and infrastructure, canopies, squish for the floors, and lighting, as well as being able to incorporate as a nonprofit and rise from idea to reality.
