Raising A Sex-Positive Child in a Sex Negative Nation

Understanding how to raise our kids in a sexually healthy way starts at birth! The language we use, the physical touch and space we promote or discourage, understanding how our children grow physically and mentally is all a part of them developing a positive attitude toward their body and a respect for themselves and others.

Kelley Johnson, Ph. D. is teaching an awesome class this summer – Raising a Sex-Positive Child in a Sex-Negative Nation. This class will help parents understand all that sexuality includes (from body image to reproduction to boundary setting to honoring “no”), think about the values you want to share with your children, and learn concrete ways to promote healthy sexual development.

The class will be offered five times this summer with the first offering on Tuesday, June 20, 9:30 – 11:30 a.m.

Walkable Wall Street & Visit with Santa

As part of City and stakeholder efforts to improve public space management and placemaking downtown, a collaboration between the City, Wall Street merchants and Asheville Downtown Association called Walkable Wall Street launches on Nov. 19, the same day as the Asheville Holiday Parade. Walkable Wall Street incorporates a temporary closure to cars along the corridor while promoting a festive pedestrian experience.

Immediately following the Holiday Parade, Santa Claus will ride through Wall Street to arrive at the Grove Arcade, where he will welcome visitors and pose for photos until 4 p.m.

Wall Street will remain closed to vehicles and open for festivities and shopping through 9 p.m. Businesses will offer extended hours and family friendly activities in the street and in stores, including gift basket building, leather cuff making, holiday ornament decorating, a scavenger hunt, live music and special promotions.

Winter Lights Display in Downtown Asheville

The date coincides with the Asheville Holiday Parade, produced by the Asheville Downtown Association and presented by Bojangles, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., also on Nov. 18, making for a festive day – and night. This year’s parade theme is “Holiday Magic” and the Grand Marshal is WWE Hall of Fame inductee Beth Copeland. The fun continues after the parade with free photos with Santa and other holiday entertainment at Pack Square. A downtown holiday shopping program will also be launched on that date.

Throughout the holiday season, downtown businesses will decorate their windows in keeping with the “Holiday Magic” theme. The Asheville Downtown Association holds a contest and winning windows will be announced Dec. 6. More information will be available at ashevilledowntown.org.

Winter Lights Downtown will be on display nightly through mid-January 2018. Winter Lights Downtown serves as a bookend to The N.C. Arboretum’s own holiday display, Winter Lights, running nightly from 6 to 10 p.m. Nov. 17 through Dec. 31. This outdoor walking tour of the Arboretum’s gardens dressed in glowing landscapes returns this year with lower, more family-friendly pricing and new nature-themed displays. Find out more at NCwinterlights.com.

“Partnering with the City of Asheville allows us to further expand our connection with the local community beyond the Arboretum’s 434-acre property,” said Arboretum Executive Director George Briggs. “We are excited for the opportunity to collaborate with the City again and share the joy of Winter Lights with locals and visitors alike.”
