Group Roan Mountain Hike

The Corpening Y Hikers will be headed to Roan Mountain on June 22! If you would like to join us, meet at the Carvers Gap parking lot at 9:30am. Roan Mountain is located on the NC/TN state line. Famous for the Catawba rhododendron gardens, Roan is one of the most beautiful sections of the Appalachian Trail. It is a 5 mile round-trip, with an elevation gain of 1,150 feet. The trail is easy to moderate and in good condition with minimal rocks.

Please bring water, a light lunch and small snack.

We will send out an email letting you know if the hike is canceled due to inclement weather by 5pm on 6/21.

Make a Book Workshops (6-8yrs & 9-12yrs)

Pop up Faces and Heads, Middles + Tails Books
Join us to kick off our One Year Celebration of the Roots + Wings Creative Campus with artist and author Esther K Smith.  She is visiting from New York City to show us her newest book, Making Books with Kids.  We are super lucky to have her coming for these two workshops.  Don’t miss out.  Classes are limited to 15 people and registration is required.  Donation based fee – pay what you can!  We will have copies of her book for sale too!

Sumi Ink Painting (A Multi-Generational Class 6+yrs)

2:30-5pm
ages 6 and up (max 9 pairs)

Experience traditional ink painting, making ink with an inkstick and inkstone for painting on rice paper. Various brushes will be available to try, including the traditional bamboo brush. With reproductions of Japanese paintings as inspiration for our own interpretations of weather and landscape, we will experiment with traditional strokes, combining them to represent nature, resulting in a standing mounted display to take home.

Sew Together: Sewing Machine Basics (A Multi-Generational Class, 6+yrs)

ages 6 and up (max 6 pairs)

Do you have a child in your life who would like to learn to sew?  Are you not sure what a bobbin is?  This is the class for you!  You and a child will learn together how to safely use your sewing machine, from winding a bobbin to threading the needle.  You will learn the basics of stitches and sewing, and we will sew a simple project together in class.  You will both be able to comfortably use a sewing machine by the end!
Bring your own machine, or let us know if you need a machine provided.

Buncombe County Schools Summer Bookmobile (K-5TH GRADE)

June 12th-July 20th, 2023

The Bookmobile is a FREE summer program where Kindergarten-5th grade can choose a book to check out from our library each week. Weekly attendance with a book return will be rewarded with a prize from our treasure chest, but weekly participation with written responses will provide even more chances for rewards! We hope to see you at one of our sites this summer! This is a great tool to keep your child’s interest in reading throughout those hot summer days!

Summer Camp Extravaganza (3yrs-Rising K)

June 13-17      Messy Mud and Tipis!

Come adventure with us this week as we play in the mud learn about building with cob!  We will

build structures for shelter including forts & even tipis, then create and tell stories around our

pretend campfire on our camping adventure.

 

June 20-24      Water wonder:

We will spend the week exploring physics through sand and water activities.  Play will

include sink, float, density, attraction and repulsion, states of matter and more!  We will

have Sprinkler play and play on the Slip and Slide to explore friction and viscosity.

 

June 27-July 1    Treasure Hunt:

Come play in the pool noodle forest! We will create and use our treasure maps to find

the way! Maps and other art will be created using bubble wrap and painting with

straws, plant and leaf stamping and lots of other unique craft methods.  Through

classifying, sorting, decoding and encoding we will practice reading foundation skills,

while calling it play!

 

July 5-8 Fun in the Field! (Short Week)

Join us for fun in the Field!  We will spend the days in the field doing a variety of

updated Field Games to promote listening and responding skills & team and leadership

talents using lots of movement and BIG sound making! There will be interactive games

and listening skills for developing social-emotional awareness using lots of messy mud,

water and paint!

 

July 11-15 Going on a Bear, Raccoon, Dog, Fish, Opossum… Hunt

Where do these animals live/ What terrain do we have to go through to find these and other creatures? We will explore how these animals move, hide and live among us.  We are going on a critter hunt, do you want to come along?  This session will include exploring rhythm & movement, animal sounds and tracks, and will culminate with a field trip to the WNC Nature Center.

 

July 18-22 Tea, Berries, Flowers and manners:

Blue, orange, purple and green…We will work with flowers and berries galore.

Arranging, Stamping and other interactive art with and about flowers, berries and

plants.  Through a variety of methods, such as pounding, stamping & plant rubbings,

students will make their own field journal for identifying local plants and flowers. We

will close with a tea party to celebrate our new understanding of our plant friends.

 

August 1-5 Rainbow Color: Exploring color!

Explore color this week we will mix paint, paint with spray bottles on squeeze bottles using a variety of materials, paint, dye, crayons and bubble wrap and straws! We will have a variety of interactive games exploring color.

 

August 8-12 Fantastic Creatures: How to train your dragon/fairy/unicorn/gnome

Come pretend play with us as we tell stories of dragons, fairies, unicorns and more! Bring your imaginations and help us create new make-believe creatures. We will make masks, costumes and props while we explore the wide range of feelings that come with imaginative play.

 

August 15-19 Pete The Cat: Live out Pete the Cat stories

*parents send a pair of tennis shoes or t-shirt for painting. Pete The Cat: Live out Pete the Cat stories as we make our own costumes and act out Pete the Cat stories, creating props and scenes for dramatizing Pete stories including groovy buttons and colorful shoes and t-shirts. Lots of messy sensorial fun! *wind exploration, wind mills, wind socks and silks *Sound cans sensory stuff Acer, paper plate tambourine
