First Annual West Asheville Leisure Olympics!

On Saturday, April 23rd, from 10:30 am to 4pm, Hall Fletcher Elementary’s Parent-Teacher Organization will host the first annual West Asheville Leisure Olympics, a family-friendly, community spring celebration that is free and open to the public.

West Asheville Leisure Olympics, or WALO (pronounced WAY-LOW) is a one-of-a-kind sporting event that combines healthy competition with leisure sports (yard games.) In addition to many free yard games happening around the field, players can register in advance to compete in one of three competitions including Bocce Ball, Disc Golf, or Cornhole. Registration is $13 per player and all proceeds go to benefit Hall Fletcher Elementary’s PTO. Winners in each Pro category will receive a $25 gift certificate to Black Dome Sports!

West Asheville Leisure Olympics will begin with Opening Ceremonies at 10:30am, featuring a performance by the students in our MusicWorks Symphony program, an award-winning, afterschool program that uses music education as a transformative and empowering tool to teach life skills. At noon, Ms. Rachel Lubitz, director of the FEAST garden program at Hall Fletcher, will fire up the wood-fired pizza oven for a garden pizza potluck! The potluck is free, and all participants are asked to bring a pizza topping, cheese, sauce, or uncooked pizza dough. The Hop will be on hand to sell ice cream to our participants as well.

Hall Fletcher Elementary, located at 60 Ridgelawn Road in East-West Asheville, in addition to being Asheville’s smallest public elementary school and a magnet school for science, math, and technology, serves the highest proportion of minority, low-income, and special-needs students of any school in the city. The Hall Fletcher community wishes to shift their focus away from restructuring for a moment, and focus instead on community building, relaxation and fun, and on celebrating another successful year together. Hall Fletcher invites the whole Asheville community to join us for a laid-back, fun event to raise spirits and celebrate our awesome kids and families.

Smoky Mountain Sk8way’s 2016 Summer Camp (Rising 1st-7th Grader)

Weekly, June 13th-August 12th

The summer is already off to a great start for kids in Haywood and Jackson Counties. Smoky Mountain Sk8way & FUN ZONE has once again partnered with area teachers and specialists to offer a fun, affordable, healthy and safe summer day camp experience for kids who’ve finished kindergarten through seventh grade. Skate, Learn, Play is the objective! “Making Friends for a Lifetime” is the theme.

“This is not your ordinary summer camp”, explains Camp Director JoLynn Bryant, “We are action packed with activities, skill building, and friend making fun! Your kids will not be bored this summer, that’s for sure!”

Activities will be both on site and off site. Every Monday a specialist will come in and give a class like hula hooping from Kelly Timco, self defense, creative dance, dog training, etc. Every Tuesday the campers head out for field trip day and visit places like the WNC Nature Center, Bowling at Country Side Lanes, trips to the post office, fire station, library, movies, Cherokee, putt-putt and more! A different field trip every week. Wednesdays are on site activities like roller skating games and skate lessons, arts and crafts, climbing wall, team building, and culinary fun, just to name a few. Every Thursdays is a trip to the pool for swimming, a trip to the park and a picnic. Fridays are the days the Sk8way invites other camps to join in for an afternoon of skating, games and inflatable fun. The Smoky Mountain Sk8way Summer Camp and it’s camp counselors strive to make it a summer to remember for everyone.

The camp offers flexible scheduling to work with parents and summer vacations. Camp hours are 7:30pm – 4:30pm. Full time enrollment (4-5 days a week) is $110 and part time is $90 (1-3 days a week). Parents can choose the days and weeks they want their child to attend. Part-time campers are accepted according to availability. There is a $60 enrollment fee to reserve your child’s space for summer and comes with a camp tshirt that the campers are asked to wear on off site activity days.
