Required Open House Meeting for Upcoming Summer Day Camp Program

The Waynesville Parks and Recreation Department’s Base Camp will host several required open house meetings for upcoming day camp programs on Feb. 23, 25, 29, and March 2, 8 and 15. There will be two sessions on each date at 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. at the Waynesville Recreation Center. Parents of all potential campers must attend one of these sessions.

This open house will allow parents/caregivers the opportunity to make an informed decision about their child’s participation in upcoming day camp programs, as well as providing information regarding the camp schedule and curriculum plans.

“The overall goal of our open house is to explain what we can offer to each child,” said Tim Petrea, program supervisor at Waynesville Parks and Recreation Department. “There will be a pre-screening process for each potential camp participant in order to ensure that we are capable of meeting each child’s needs. All day camp programs operate between a one to eight or one to 10 counselor to camper ratio. There will also be numerous outdoor activities.”

There will be a great deal of physical exercise involved in the summer camps.

“The open house is a good opportunity to explain our product,” said Petrea. “When parents entrust us with the care of their child, we know that the primary concerns are safety and whether the child is having fun. Our goal is to provide the safest and happiest experience for our participants. We want parents to think of us as partners in their child’s well being. The better prepared the staff is before camp, the better we can help their children be successful once they are here.”

For more information, call the Waynesville Parks and Recreation Department at 456-2030 or email tpetrea@waynesvillenc.gov.

Nature Adventures Summer Camp (Rising K-5th grade)

Camp starts at 9:00 am and ends at 3:00 pm with option to add on a martial arts class and aftercare until 5:30 pm.  Students can drop off as early as 8:30 (please email us ahead of time to let us know.)

Weekly Themes

Mountain Adventures: June 13th – June 17th
Join us as we embark on an expedition!  This week we’ll meet many plants, animals and trees that live in different parts of the Southern Appalachians and learn to move with the balance and steadiness of the mountains around us.

Water Wonders: June 20th – June 24th

What’s unique about a water molecule?  What can we learn from the rain, the streams and the oceans?  Learn to move like water and you can navigate any challenge!

Team Work Week!: July 18th – July 22nd
Martial arts is all about teamwork!  Join us this week for an adventure first as a world famous soccer team and then as a band of Ninjas on an imaginary trek through the wilderness.  We will learn how to solve problems between teammates and find ways to work together through our differences.

Inner Spark: July 25th – July 29th
This week draws its inspiration from the sun!  Explore how energy moves through each part of our world and discover that brave spark that lives inside of you too.

Flying Lessons: Aug 1st – Aug 5th
Jump on the wind and get a new perspective.  Learn why the Ninja were rumored to have magic flying powers, and get to know about the birds of our own region.  Through games and adventures, we gain better awareness of ourselves and the world around us.

Endless Explorations: Aug 8th – Aug 12th
Discover the different communities in nature and the similar elements that spiral through each of them.  Find common ground within the diversity of the fields, forests, streams, and gardens.  Then take those lessons everywhere: into our martial arts movements, our community of friends, and out to the whole world.

Mix it Up!: August 15th – 19th
In this week, we explore one element each day!  We get to see how Earth, Water, Fire and Wind all work together to make up the amazing world around us.  Each day also has a value theme to help us build our character as martial artists while discovering the wonders of nature.

Afternoon Classes and Downtime

Extend your adventure till 5:30 pm with our wonderful summertime martial arts classes.  Summer classes have a relaxed and playful environment.  When not in class, campers will spend time winding down at Art Buzz Kids and the Hop.  Still, we bet they will come home ready for dinner and bed!
