NOV 30th-Jan 4th … VICTORIAN CHRISTMAS: Visitors will enjoy our lovely decorations in our period rooms (1840s -1890s) and also learn about the influence of Clement Moore’s famous poem on our Christmas traditions. Children will enjoy a scavenger hunt based on the 12 Days of Christmas.
Admission: $10 adult, $5 students/children (under 8 free)

Daily Craft Demonstration at Folk Art Center

“The Folk Art Center is home to the Southern Highland Craft Guild. The center showcases the finest in traditional and contemporary crafts of the Southern Appalachians. In addition to an Eastern National bookstore and Blue Ridge Parkway information desk, the center houses three galleries, a library and Allanstand Craft Shop.”

The Southern Highland Craft Guild hosts daily craft demonstrations in the Folk Art Center lobby from March – December. Demonstration hours are 10am to 4pm. Visitors are invited to watch highly skilled craftspeople work and talk about their craft. Visit the link above for the schedule of demonstrators.

Visit Thomas Wolfe’s Childhood Home: One of American Literature’s Most Famous Landmarks

Tuesdays through Saturdays, 9:00am – 5:00pm

Visit the Historical Home of an American Poet, Writer, Historian, Biographer of Abraham Lincoln, and Social Activist

Visitors may only tour the Sandburg Home on a guided tour. Sandburg Home Tours (As of April 2022, tours of the house are FREE until further notice) and happen Thursday to Sunday at 11am, 1pm, 2pm. Reserving in advance lets you pick your preferred house tour time. No reservation needed for touring the grounds, trails, barn, and access to the bookstore and visitor information in the ground floor of the Sandburg Home.

Parking lots, grounds, gardens, and trails are open every day, year-round, sunrise to sunset. Occasional closures arise from weather events, check park alerts for more information. The Sandburg Home, Visitor Center and Farm Area have seasonal hours that vary.

“A poet of the people, Carl Sandburg provided a popular voice for the American people of the 20th Century and still speaks to us through his words, songs, and the beauty and serenity of Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site. The park is located on 264 acres in western North Carolina. Visitors can tour the Sandburg Home, hike on over 5 miles of trails, visit the farm and dairy goats, and much more. The average visitor spends two hours at “Connemara.”

Explore the Preserved & Interpreted Life of the Reems Creek Valley from 1795-1840

Explore daily life on an early 1800s plantation in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Step inside a 1790s slave dwelling and hear the stories of the women and men who were enslaved by the Vances. Take a tour through the reconstructed birthplace of Zebulon B. Vance to discover how the environment and society of Western North Carolina shaped his political career.

Tucked into the picturesque Reems Creek Valley, our site features seven historic and reconstructed buildings as well as a visitor center with interactive exhibits.  Visitors can take a guided tour of the site, browse our exhibits, and conclude their visit with lunch in our picnic shelter—featuring panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Walk Into History

A MUSEUM WITHOUT WALLS!
Walk into History on Asheville’s Urban Trail Walking Tour. Part art installation, part history lesson, the Urban Trail “highlights the unique architecture, people, and historic events of the city. Divided into five distinct eras, each of which has a symbol. These symbols are carved into pink granite blocks placed in the sidewalk along the way for you to follow. Enjoyed in its entirety, the walking tour requires approximately two hours to complete.”

The map in this brochure identifies each of the 30 stations by a number. All 30 stations include a piece of art and/or a bronze plaque that describes the station.” Download a printable map linked HERE.

Go ziplining at KidZip! (4-10yrs)

Open DAILY over summer!

“A series of easier zips designed for younger kids. Closer to the ground and not as high as the Asheville Zipline Canopy Adventure, the KidZip is a great introduction to ziplines. A continuous belay system is used and kids can repeat the course for up to two hours.

Minimum age is 4 and maximum age is 10 (4 to 6 year-olds must have an adult escort).”

Brave an obstacle course at Asheville Treetops Adventure Park! (4+yrs)

“Comprised of 60 unique climbing, flying, walking, jumping, swinging, and rappelling challenges anchored to over 30 towering trees and poles tucked into a wooded park. Five different adventure trails that allow Park Guests the choice to challenge only the obstacles they feel comfortable with. While you explore the park you will move at your own pace and tackle challenges as an individual.”

Designed for kids as young as 4 (with an adult escort).
