Little Explorers (walking-5yrs)

Saturdays from 8:00 am until 10:00 am and Sundays from 2:00 pm till 4:00 pm.

This program is a toddler free-play time for children age 5 and under to explore the gym, use the equipment and enjoy their friends while playing. The cost is $5/hour after the annual registration fee.

Gazers of the Galaxy

Gazers of the Galaxy with PARI; at the Historic Cradle of Forestry

“Mark your calendar dates for April through July. PARI staff will be assisting the Pisgah Field School, welcoming you and your family to a star gazing evening at the Cradle of Forestry. The first event is April 30, followed by May 21, June 11 and July 29. The programs will run from 7:30 PM-10 PM. Observations with PARI’s optical telescopes will examine the moon, planets and night sky objects, after the sky is dark. Additional information can be found at the Cradle of Forestry or the Pisgah Field School.”

Evenings at PARI

Evenings at PARI are held the second Friday of each month. The public is invited to visit PARI for an introduction to PARI and its mission. The program includes a tour, lecture on a current astronomy topic and outdoor observing session. 

Reservations are required, with bookings taking place until 3pm the day of the event.

February 12th: The Gregorian Calendar and the Leap Year. “Dr. Bob Hayward describes the origin of the Gregorian calendar that we currently use, and the origin of the Leap Year.”

March 11th: Celestial Navigation. “Terry Jednaszewski will explain the practice of determining your position on the earth by looking at the sun and stars.”

April 8th: The James Webb Space Telescope. “Mike Mentzel will provide the details and development history of the successor to the Hubble Space Telescope, as part of the NC Science Festival.”

Weather permitting, outdoor astronomical observations will occur at the PARI Nature Center. Click PAST PROGRAM PHOTOS to see pictures from past Evening at PARI events.

SciGirls – “Deep Sea Diver” (9-14yrs)

SciGirls – “Deep Sea Diver” January program rescheduled for February 18, 2016

On February 18, 2016 SciGirls will be meeting to learn how to design and build neutrally buoyant vessels like under water submersibles. This session will take place at the 4H Office in Brevard. The address is 98 East Morgan St. Brevard, NC 28712.

SciGirls events are for girls ages 9-14 and are scheduled the last Tuesday of each month during the school year. The participation fee is $10 per student. Find out more about the national programming for SciGirls at http://pbskids.org/scigirls/.

  • November – March Property Hours: 8 a.m. – 7 p.m. Daily
    • Closed Christmas Day
  • Incoming gate closes one hour prior to closing time. 
  • Baker Exhibit Center and Bonsai Exhibition Garden Hours: 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
  • Connections Gallery Gift Shop Hours: 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
  • Bent Creek Bistro Hours: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Daily
  • Rocky Cove Railroad Hours: Trains run Saturdays and Sundays, 12 – 4 p.m. April through October

Parking Fees

  • Personal/Standard Vehicle (up to 20′ long): $20
  • Large vehicles (21′-29′ long): $60
  • Busses and Oversize Vehicles (30′ long+): $125
  • Members: Free
  • First Tuesday of every month, the Arboretum offers a 50% discount on personal vehicle parking.

NOV 30th-Jan 4th … VICTORIAN CHRISTMAS: Visitors will enjoy our lovely decorations in our period rooms (1840s -1890s) and also learn about the influence of Clement Moore’s famous poem on our Christmas traditions. Children will enjoy a scavenger hunt based on the 12 Days of Christmas.
Admission: $10 adult, $5 students/children (under 8 free)

Daily Craft Demonstration at Folk Art Center

“The Folk Art Center is home to the Southern Highland Craft Guild. The center showcases the finest in traditional and contemporary crafts of the Southern Appalachians. In addition to an Eastern National bookstore and Blue Ridge Parkway information desk, the center houses three galleries, a library and Allanstand Craft Shop.”

The Southern Highland Craft Guild hosts daily craft demonstrations in the Folk Art Center lobby from March – December. Demonstration hours are 10am to 4pm. Visitors are invited to watch highly skilled craftspeople work and talk about their craft. Visit the link above for the schedule of demonstrators.
