‘I Am Black and Blanc’ Art Show

“To understand why I create the way I do. You must understand that you all influence me in some way shape or form. Every interaction I leave with a piece of you in me. This Art show is about all of us~ My art is a process in a jounrney to connect and see life through as many eyes as possible. The Good, The Bad and the Replusive. I love the act of painting and how it drives my emotions to paint more than just my hand telling the brush where to go. So, in this show, you will see my paintings and photos of what Black and Blanc mean to me*
My work explores the relationship between multiculturalism and new class identities. Ever since I was a teenager I have been fascinated by the endless oscillation of relationships.

WNC’s #1 Photographer for 5 years in a row, Micah Mackenzie, Collaborates with like beings for Photography Show/Art Show at Izzy’s downtown Asheville. This upcoming solo show opens on Febuary 4th at Izzy’s downtown* 74 N Lexington Ave, Asheville, NC 28801.This is my first show in over a year and I plan on many more.”

After the Burn

“It’s been two years since Lake James State Park reintroduced fire to the landscape after decades of well-intentioned, but ill-informed suppression. The first prescribed fire in the parks 30-year history took place in February, 2014 in the area traversed by the Fox Den Loop trail and it’s a great time to revisit the site to weigh the consequences, both good and bad. We may also assess a more-recent burn unit if the 2016 prescribed fire season goes according to plan. Park Ranger Jamie Cameron will lead the way on this moderate, 2.25-mile hike in search of plants and animals that were affected by the fire. Meet at the Catawba River Area breezeway at 2 p.m.”

Boat Tour

The waters and shoreline of Lake James is bursting with life and there’s no better way to explore than by boat. Park Ranger Clay Veasey will be your captain and guide aboard the park patrol boat as we search for loons, ospreys, eagles and scenic vistas. The weather could be blustery or it could be sultry, so be sure to watch the forecast and dress appropriately for the day (remember it’s always cooler out on the water) if you are one of the eight lucky participants. Registration is required and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Call the park office at 828-584-7728 to reserve your spot. Meet at the Paddy’s Creek Area East Picnic Shelter at 1:45 p.m. for a briefing and prompt 2 p.m. departure.

Date of Event:

Wed, 06/21/2017 – 2:00pm

Start Location:

Paddy’s Creek Area – East Shelter

Sandy Cliff Overlook Hike

“Check out one of the best views on the lake with Park Ranger Clay Veasey. The Sandy Cliff Overlook Trail is an easy, 1/2-mile route through a section of the park that received a restorative prescribed fire in late 2014. Come see for yourself the amazing habitat improvement that can be achieved through a thoughtful prescribed burning program and bring your camera to record the awesome overlook view of Lake James. Meet at the Catawba River Area parking lot at 10 a.m.”

‘Three Sleeps’ Bilingual Book Reading for Kids author event

“The local author/illustrator team behind “Three Sleeps” will present their book about separation anxiety in English and Spanish.

“Mama goes away on a trip for three nights while Baby stays with Daddy and Grammy. Mama returns with a surprise, but what will happen when it’s time for Grammy to go home?”

Written by a marriage and family therapist, and geared towards younger children, this picture book addresses the normal developmental issue of separation anxiety in a fun, colorful way. A travel log at the end of the book helps your child to feel involved in a parent or caregiver’s trip away.”
