Summer Solstice Soiree

Join us for a casually elegant evening of dining and celebration, in the flower fields! We want to celebrate the summer solstice and the grand opening of our new event space with you! Intentional Swine will be preparing a three course meal with most of the ingredients coming straight from our farm. Burial Beer, (really the best craft beer in this beer city!) will be available to those of drinking age as well as wine and herbal tea. East West Vintage Rentals will beautify the space with their lovely table wares and Alex Fisher of Lucky Penny Creative will handle the details so us farmers can celebrate along with you! We are so grateful for this team and for all the support we’ve received. We really look forward to welcoming you all out to toast the warm summer sun!

Detailed menu with GF and vegan options coming soon. Kids under 10 eat free!

A Run/Walk for Pi (and Pie)

UNC Asheville will host a Pi Run/Walk on Sunday, March 18, in celebration of Pi Day that occurs earlier in the week. The 3.14-mile fun run on UNC Asheville’s Straus Track is open to everyone, with a registration fee of $5 to reserve your spot. The run begins at Pi time – 3:14 p.m. and will conclude with pie for all.

“Many people end up dreading anything to do with math by the time they are out of high school, but math is bigger and more creative than what we usually see in school. It is also growing in importance in the workforce and in our daily lives. Math teaches the problem-solving skills we need to navigate a complicated world. The Pi Run is a chance to celebrate math – to run with math, not away from it,” said UNC Asheville Professor of Mathematics Sam Kaplan, who also directs the Asheville Initiative for Math and leads the Pi Run, now in its second year.

Onsite check-in and registration begin at 2 p.m. on March 18. Advance registration is encouraged and is available online at unca.edu/pi-run. T-shirts will be available for participants who register early and will be awarded at the end of the event.

Proceeds from the Pi Run will benefit the Asheville Initiative for Math at UNC Asheville and its Marvelous Math Club, which fosters math leadership. The Club meets weekly at Pisgah View Apartments and is run in partnership with the Housing Authority of the City of Asheville and Parent U, a program of Asheville City Schools. Transportation to and from the event to the Community Center at Pisgah View Apartments is being provided thanks to a generous grant from the Gannett Foundation through the Asheville Citizen-Times. Additional support is provided by State Farm Agent Rebecca Sandoval.

The 2018 Pi Run at UNC Asheville will be held outdoors even in inclement weather, but will move indoors to the Brookhouse Track in the case of severe weather.

For more information, contact Brandy Bowman, community engagement project manager, at 828.258.7695 or bbowman1@unca.edu. To register for the Pi Run/Walk, go to unca.edu/pi-run.

Visit with the Rescued and Rehabilitated Farm Animals

Tuesdays-Saturdays, 11:00am-5:00pm

Animal Haven is a farm sanctuary in East Asheville open to the public (free admission). There is also an all-volunteer run thrift store at the entrance to the sanctuary (for which gently used donations are always welcome).
Visitors to the sanctuary can pull into the parking (by the thrift store) and walk across the creek footbridge. You may be greeted by the farmhouse dogs at the gate. Then, head through the wooden gate, toward the red barns to interact with all manner of farm animals (goats, chickens, sheep, a ram, a cow, geese, ducks, potbelly pigs, along with dogs and cats).
Children of any age are welcome with parents or other supervising adults.
Visitors can check in with the volunteer on duty at the thrift store upon arrival and do a self-guided tour. For the safety of humans and animals alike, we ask that all children be supervised while on sanctuary grounds.
Also, for a guided tour or volunteer experience, visitors can call Animal Haven in advance (828-299-1635).
