Winter Work Party at the Dr. GWC Edible Park

Join in the fun! This will be the first work party of the year at our own Edible Park! Projects will include erosion control, clearing weeds and vines from around trees (there is a pear that’s been completely hidden by kudzu for at least the past year), some winter pruning, and lots of having fun and learning from one another. We are trying to arrange for some food to be provided, but please bring some to share if you can.

Please also bring:

1) your own dish and eating utensils

2) work clothes including gloves, sturdy shoes, and layers of clothing depending on the weather

3) Tools (if you have them) such as pruners, pruning saw, loppers, pruning ladder, shovel, pickaxe/mattock, wheelbarrow, and your favorite weeding/vine-hacking implement.

WAYNESVILLE – The Waynesville Parks and Recreation Department will hold an American Red Cross Lifeguarding Course at the Waynesville Recreation Center on Wednesday, February 28, at 4 pm. This is for anyone interested in being a lifeguard.

This will be a blended learning course meaning that skill sessions will be conducted in the Waynesville Recreation Center pool and book work will be done online. The process includes passing a swim pre-test (swim 300 yards continuously, tread water 2 minutes using legs only, & a timed brick dive) on the first day.

Successful candidates will then be given an online link via email to access the online portion. All candidates who pass the online portion and exam will bring proof back to the Waynesville Recreation Center where the final skills session will be administered. You must be at least 15 years of age to register. The cost for the course is $200 when completed.

For more information please contact Luke Kinsland at 456-2030 or email lkinsland@waynesvillenc.gov

How to Provide an Environment that Nurtures Children

Who and what surround our children will shape their lives. Awareness is the first step in making a positive change, knowledge is the second. Facts and scenarios will be presented in a fun way on how best to support our children in today’s fast-paced society. Parents, educators, grandparents, and caregivers will enjoy this presentation.

Join Anne Centers in becoming an advocate for protecting the sanctity of childhood!

Good literature feeds the soul like good food feeds the body. Anne Centers’ “Mary Rose and the Enchanted Forest” is an inspiring story of a young girl who steps into a magical world of adventure with the Wee Folk. Her eyes are opened to the majesty of nature and connection of all things. Excerpts from the book will be woven into the class along with golden nuggets of wisdom from educational and child developmental experts. These include Kim John Payne, Sarah Wise Bauer, Joseph Chilton Pearce, Bo Bronson & Ashley Merryman, Nancy Carlsson-Paige, and others.

Anne Rachel Centers, B.S and MAT in Education, Certified Early Childhood Waldorf Teacher, is originally from Buffalo, New York. She lived in Florida for six years, then moved to Asheville, North Carolina in 1995. She has taught in a variety of places from Hilo, Hawai’i to Kotlik, Alaska (200 miles from Siberia). After working in public schools as an elementary, then special education teacher, at age 60, she graduated as an Early Childhood Waldorf teacher. It is this knowledge and experience that has inspired her to create stories of wonder and beauty for today’s children.

Tyler Garrison’s Celebration of Life

Please join us this Friday at 2pm to celebrate Tyler Garrison at one of his favorite spots, Salvage Station.

We are asking everyone to bring a snack/dish to share. The Salvage station will staff the bar and you can buy drinks if you wish.

From 2pm-4pm the Salvage station will be closed to the public to honor Tyler and we are so grateful to have this space. The doors will open at 4pm to the public but everyone is welcome to stay as long as you’d like.

If you want to speak please make sure you contact Nikki so she can schedule the time.

We are asking everyone to skip the flowers, and if you feel called to, please donate money to Nova or Community Roots. We will have collection jars there.

This date is very special because it is his 35th birthday. The love and support has been overwhelming, thank you.
