Hidden Figures Story Time (4-8yrs)

Join us for a story time featuring the new picture book for ages 4 to 8 telling the story of four African American women who made history helping get Americans into space. This inspiring true story was made into a bestselling book for adults and an award-winning movie and uncovered a fascinating piece of history that had been previously untold due to its classified nature.

We’ll follow up the book reading with a fun craft that’s also a great STEM activity.

We’ll make straw rockets. Launch them with your breath and watch them fly! Take them home and keep experimenting: how does the angle affect the distance it flies?

This book and activity are best for ages 4 to 8 years old, though younger siblings are welcome to come along.

Join us on Jan. 30 at 6:00 PM in the Stephens – Lee Recreation Center for a community conversation about the history of desegregation in Asheville City Schools. Middle school students from the Find Your Voice IRL program will provide a dramatic presentation of key events from the desegregation of the Asheville City Schools. Community leaders will share their lived-experiences of that time. We will explore the lasting legacy of the desegregation process in Asheville probing how it impacts our schools today.
