Cheryl Keefer New Works: Something to Celebrate

Asheville Gallery of Art’s July show features the work of Cheryl Keefer whose signature impressionist style interprets moody landscapes as well as urban scenes. The show runs July 1-31 during gallery hours, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1-4 p.m. Sunday. The gallery, located at 82 Patton Avenue in Asheville, across from Pritchard Park, will host a reception for the artist on Friday, July 7, from 5-8 p.m. Everyone is cordially invited to stop by.

The artist enjoys oil painting en plein air, whether on a mountainside or along a marsh. She is often inspired to listen to that still small voice that speaks to her, sometimes quietly, filling her with awe and gratitude, and moving her to create. Simple ideas become visual expressions of her personal epiphanies: morning light glistening on a wooded stream, a sunset punctuating a cloudy sky, fresh spring blossoms highlighting an otherwise gray day, a red umbrella piercing through the rain.

In a loud world full of so many inconsistencies, Keefer says she finds wonder and joy in the rhythmic cycles of life on earth, celebrating all seasons in all kinds of weather and times of day. Each composition reflects her endeavor to rejoice everyday, and her hope in the wondrousness of creation. “Momentous occasions of life are few and far between so I want the viewer to see cause for celebration, even in the rain.”

The artist holds degrees in art history and art education from The University of Alabama, Birmingham, and graduate painting from Virginia Commonwealth University. She enjoys working and visiting with clients and friends in her studio, NorthLight, in Asheville’s River Arts District.

Asheville Outdoor Cinema presents your 2017 Summer Movie Series

We’ve been working with the City of Asheville to secure the Carrier Park Ballfield throughout the summer for Asheville’s ultimate outdoor entertainment experiences.

Giant jenga, giant cornhole, giant Connect 4, frisbee golf, live music and performers, beer and wine, local food trucks, and classic major motion picture screenings.

TIME:
Gates open at 6:30, Music 7:30, Movie 9pm.

FOOD/DRINK:
Two of Asheville’s best purveyors of food will be onsite to charm your taste buds. Expect a lemonade stand, popcorn and ice cream to top it off. Some of your favorite local beers will be on tap, as well as red and white wine.

ENTRANCE:
The entrance is located inside Carrier Park, on the west side of the park. You may bike in or park for free at Carrier Park parking lot.

SEATING/CHAIRS:
The location is a grassy outfield of the ballfield. Pillows, cushions and blankets are preferred, though low chairs with low backs are allowed. If you have a tall chair (like a lawn chair or camping style chair more than 6 inches off the ground) you will be required to sit outside the center of the venue, which is marked with signs on both the left & right side of the venue. There is ample room for chairs, so please don’t block the view of the person(s) behind you.

DOGS:
We don’t know yet. We’re waiting for the City to let us know… stay tuned – we’ll post on our FB as soon as we know about the furries.

SPONSOR PARTNER:
We’re teaming up with Asheville’s Blue Ridge Pride to help us with the events. Check out BlueRidgePride.org to learn more.

Botanical Elements Workshop (Kid Friendly)

Come have a unique night out, get your hands dirty, and create a beautiful living piece of art for your home. In each Botanical Elements Workshop we will explore a different plant based art form in every session. You can bring a beverage of your choice (alcohol welcome if 21+) and spend a Monday evening sitting outside and creating a beautiful piece of work in the sunshine with your friends.

$25 per class
To plan accurately for materials, pre-registration is strongly encouraged

June 19 – Kokedama … (Japanese hanging moss garden). Kokedama directly translated to English means “moss ball”. Traditionally it is a ball of soil, covered with moss, on which a plant grows. These plants are visually stunning and easy to maintain. You can make one to put on a shelf or one to hang up! We will have enough supplies for everyone to make one Kokedama moss garden complete with one small plant.

July 3rd: Himmeli Air Plant Holders … The word ‘Himmeli’ is from German descent and means ‘sky’ or ‘heaven.’ Himmeli is a type of mobile made of small pipes or straws and wire. Traditionally they have been used in Nordic countries as Christmas decorations. We will have enough copper pipe and wire to make one air plant holder complete with one air plant. If you wish to make more, we will have extra colored plastic straws and wire available.

July 17th: Concrete Succulent Planters … In this workshop we will make our own concrete planter molds using cardboard and tape or recycled materials. There will be enough materials for everyone to make one concrete planter complete with a small succulent plant.

July 31st: Drift Wood Planter with Air Plants … In this workshop we will be gluing living air plants and dried moss and lichen onto drift wood to make beautiful living planters. Air plants will be permanently attached to driftwood and can be watered using a spray bottle. There are enough supplies for everyone to make one driftwood planter containing two air plants.

August 14 – Flower Crowns … In this workshop we will use dried flowers, wire, and ribbon to create flower crowns that will never wilt! We will have enough materials for everyone to make one flower crown per person.
