The tranquility of paddling a canoe on a quiet morning is one of life’s simple pleasures. Discover the beauty of Lake James State Park from the water with Park Ranger Kevin Bischof. Whether you’re an expert paddler or you don’t know the difference between starboard and port, we’ll provide the equipment and instruction to make it a memorable morning. Six park canoes are set aside for this free program and each is capable of carrying two adults and one child. The program starts at 9 a.m. and meets at the Paddy’s Creek swim beach. Threads and Beats – in the RAD
A fashion, music and art arrangement with local independent retailers, creators and artists. Event starts 10am, DJs start around noon with Fresh West Pizza serving pie-drinks. Hosted by Northville Apparel and Vinyl Revisions in the RAD (342 Depot St.).
Music will be provided by the Vinyl Revisions collective of DJs including Krista, La Morte, Oneiric, Terrence Young and more playing all vinyl only sets spanning mutliple genres of danceable tunes.

Toe River Racqueteers Free Summer Camp

9-10 am daily, Monday and Tuesday for kids ages 5-9
10:15 – 11:45 am daily, Monday and Tuesday for kids ages 10+
Racquets will be provided to children who do not have one. Please plan to arrive at the courts 15 minutes prior to the scheduled camp time and bring water, sunscreen already applied, tennis shoes or other appropriate close-toed shoes, and a hat if needed.

Mental Wellness Walk
Registration is now open:
Presented by National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Western Carolina and All Souls Counseling Center, the 1st Annual Mental Wellness Walk will take place on Saturday, June 17 th at Carrier and French Broad River Parks. Participants can walk a 2K or 5K (your choice). Event will include music, refreshments, and resource displays.
The Mental Wellness Walk seeks to raise awareness of the importance of mental wellness and community resources that exist for people with mental health issues. Mental health was ranked the “leading health issue facing the county” according to the most recent Buncombe County Community Health Assessment with half the respondents reporting that mental health care “was the most difficult to access.”
Check-In & Registration begin at 9:00 AM | Walk & Program begin at 10:00 AM.
Meet at Carrier Park Pavilion, 220 Amboy Rd., Asheville, NC 28806. Walkers can register individually ($10 per person) or as a team ($15+ per team), and can recruit sponsors. T-Shirt guaranteed if you register before June 1st.

Volunteer Work Day
Have you walked the Hominy Creek Greenway lately? The Friends of Hominy Creek Greenway have been busy installing a native plant garden around the new tool shed. You can help out at our volunteer work day from 10-12:30!
Meet at the tool shed by the Shelburne Rd. entrance. We will be weeding and mulching the new plantings. Bring your own water. Tools and gloves are provided.
