Annual Youth Retreat at Great Tree (7+yrs)

For children ages 7and older. 2-day, overnight retreat for young people led by Rev. Teijo Munnich, Dharma teachings, arts and crafts, and free play. Parents are invited to closing ceremony on Wednesday afternoon

Grand opening of the Bare Dark Sky Observatory

Experience the wonders of the universe through a 34 inch telescope, the largest in the Southeast, at the Bare Dark Sky Observatory during the grand opening event on May 25. The rain date is on June 1st.

Activities will begin at 4:00 pm and a ribbon cutting will take place at 7:00 pm.

The Bare Dark Sky Observatory, named for Warren and Larissa Bare, is located at the Mayland Earth to Sky Park (formally called the Energy Exchange) in Yancey County. The International Dark Sky Association (IDA) designated the Earth to Sky Park as the first IDA certified park in the Southeastern United States. The observatory will allow community members an opportunity to experience the wonders of the universe, while providing Astronomy students with hands-on learning. The observatory sits at an elevation of 2,736 feet and offers a 360-degree view.

The Observatory houses the “Sam Scope” in named memory of Samuel Phillips, the telescope is a f/3.6 StarStructure Newtonian telescope, with a 34 inch (0.86 meter) mirror. It will be the largest telescope in the Southeast in dark skies dedicated for public use for educational and public outreach activities. Funding for the telescope was provided by the Samuel L. Phillips Family Foundation. In addition, MCC will allso have a planetary telescope, perfect for viewing the different planets.

Beginning at 4:00pm on May 25th, the public is invited to tour the Bare Dark Sky Observatory and see the telescopes. There will be educational videos to watch, outdoor games to play, and tours of the Earth to Sky Park available.

Bubba’s Good Eats will have a food truck on site at 4 pm for visitors to enjoy.

Because parking access to the Observatory is limited, MCC will offer shuttle rides to the building for tours. Guests are recommended to wear walking shoes as the ground is uneven. Bring a flashlight if you plan on staying past dark to catch a glimpse through the telescopes because lighting is limited due to the restrictions of being an International Dark Sky Association certified Park.

Following the grand opening event, the Observatory will be open by reservation and for events/classes over the summer. Groups are welcome to make a reservation.

Class size is limited.Your youngest performers will love these two-hour classes offered throughout the summer. You’ll love not having a long commitment or a large price-tag!

Mountain Street Dances

Enjoy cloggin’ & square dancin’ at an old-fashioned mountain hoe down! Live mountain music, demonstrations & instruction by local clogging teams. Refreshments, historic Courthouse lawn. 6:30-9pm.

The Main Street area, immediately in front of the courthouse, is closed to traffic and parking at 5:00 pm. Instead of the usual cars‚ attendees will find a stage, bleachers, and asphalt covered with a thick dusting of corn meal to create a dance area. Bring a lawn chair or blanket, limited bleacher seating is available. Bring your dancin’ shoes but please leave pets at home as they are not allowed by Town ordinance. Light refreshments are available at the venue for purchase and downtown restaurants are open for dinner.

We start serving lunch at 11:30, but our doors generally open around 9:30. Please keep that in mind on  cold mornings when you might want a warm and friendly space to hang out in, and a hot cup of coffee.

“12 Baskets Cafe is a place for EVERYONE to come and share a meal in community- not just the homeless and marginalized. We would love to see more and more new faces in the cafe, eating a meal together with people they might never encounter in their day-to-day life. Having a steady income DOES NOT disqualify you.

Yes, we want to address hunger, but we’re also trying to break down barriers between socioeconomic classes and other divisive identifiers to remind us that we’re all part of the same essential human family. The only way to do this is having a conversation, together. Please keep this in mind and come join us!

French Broad Riverkeeper Paddle Trip

French Broad Riverkeeper Paddle Trip

July 19-22, join us for a four-day float

 

Now is the time to start planning your French Broad River adventure! Every year, MountainTrue and our French Broad Riverkeeper take participants on a guided trip down the French Broad River, camping out along the French Broad River Paddle Trail℠ (proudly sponsored by Oskar Blues Brewery). Leave the shuttle and logistics to us and enjoy the river’s beauty from the water!
We take care of all the logistics and camp sites so you can enjoy this beautiful river with some of the top craft breweries in the entire world along the way. We’ll put in at Hap Simpson River Park and take out in time to hit Oskar Blues. We’ll float down to Sierra Nevada from there, and then hit New Belgium once we get into Asheville. It’s our very own Brew Paddle. We’ll also highlight the work of the Riverkeeper program and take water samples, but we’ll be sure to leave enough time for cornhole and s’mores at the campsites.
This trip features some of the most stunning scenery in the region, and we’ll highlight and take water quality samples in an effort to understand the threats to the French Broad River. Camping has been arranged for each night of the trip, providing an exciting opportunity to paddle-camp along the banks of the river every night of your journey. Great hearty food will be provided for each meal. Breakfast will range from pancakes, bacon and eggs, yogurt, fruit, and bagels. Lunch will be made in the morning and eaten on the river. Dinner will range from pasta, to dinner out at local eateries, to pizza.

Dads’ Day River Clean Up

Join us for a SPECIAL Dad’s Day River Clean Up with MountainTrue, Asheville GreenWorks, and RiverLink. Dads, moms, sisters, brothers, sons, and daughters….everyone’s invited!

We’ll put in at Jean Webb River Park and float on down to the Salvage Station, picking trash and tires from the river the whole way. French Broad Chocolates has promised some goodies for us at the take-out, and we encourage folks to cool off with a cold brew at the Salvage Station.

– 1.5 mile paddle on French Broad
Meet at Jean Webb River Park (30 Riverside Dr. Asheville NC 28801). We’ll put on the river and float down to the Salvage Station. French Broad Outfitters will shuttle us back to our cars at the end of the paddle.

Boats, gloves, trash bags, and paddle gear will be supplied by MountainTrue, Riverlink, and Asheville Greenworks. Bring some water, a hat, and sunscreen.

This event is a great opportunity to celebrate Father’s Day, make a tangible contribution to Asheville’s most important natural asset, and raise awareness about issues that affect the cleanliness of our French Broad River.

Camp Wildberry (6-12yrs)

Located just 25 minutes from Asheville in Barnardsville, NC on an 80 acre farm.

What to expect at Camp Wildberry:

With forts, mud, horses, bunnies, songs and creativity we know there will be something for every child. We will embark on daily adventures inspired by the land and enlivened by the curiosity and imagination of each child. Anticipate providing spare clothes, water bottle, packed lunch and backpack. We’ll supply the snacks and fun.

To ensure a quality experience for each child we maintain a staff to child ratio of 9 – 1.

Payment must be received by July 15th, 2017 in full to be enrolled for camp.

After care available 3:00-5:30 … Mini Fine Arts Camp/ after-care($75) Monday- Friday 3:00- 5:30 pm. Campers can participate in 2 of 3 Fine Arts Activities: Theater: Campers will have an opportunity to participate in a mini theater production in one of 3 ways; Performer, Set/prop team, Sound & production team.  We will work with the children and place them in the group they feel most comfortable in. Dance: We will be offering a Hip Hop “lite” workshop using Kid friendly tunes that will be fun for both girls and boys of all age. Art: Local Artists will lead the children in a painting workshop each week.
