Folkmoot 2016 – Parade of Nations!

Parade of Nations has become a staple for Haywood County. This year we are changing the date and time to allow for families to attend. This spectacular – and free -event features not only Folkmoot’s international groups but local organizations, giant puppets and stilt walkers. This event is a chance for Western Carolinians to welcome their international guests to the area, as well as preview their cultural performances.

International Festival Day, traditionally held on the first weekend of the festival, has been moved to the final weekend of the festival, July 30, to allow greater participation for all Folkmoot enthusiasts and festival attendees.

Haywood Street visioning open house

Let’s dream big for Asheville’s so-called Pit of Despair. What would you like to do on the 1-acre Haywood Street site across from the U.S. Cellular Center and the Bascilica of St. Lawrence? The Asheville Design Center, which has been charged with leading a visioning process for the site, will host an open house, create a creative space where people can think beyond form. Instead, they’re asking people to begin with function: What do you want to DO there, not what do you want to SEE there.

There will be a 3D model of the property and other visual aids. People can put up sticky notes on a wall. They can also go out to the property and play a “Place Game.”

The Asheville Design Center will ask people to go out to Pritchard and Pack Square parks with surveys, to think about what works, what’s missing and how whatever happens on the Haywood Street property can complement the two existing parks in downtown.

So come on down. Get creative, share your ideas. Let’s make it a great place with lots of uses, inviting for a wide range of people. Don’t think about budget. Don’t think about what it looks like. Think about what you would like to do there.

The feedback will be compiled for the Haywood Street Advisory Team’s consideration.

Here is some background on the committee and the visioning process: http://bit.ly/1pnQI1u

Run for the Warriors 1 mile walk/run and 5K

FighterWithin is so happy to sponsor this event!

It’s no big secret that I support our military in every possible way and this event is to honor them.

As each year comes and goes, the generation of our veterans are slimming down. With each generation that passes, I personally have noticed a lack of respect and recognition that our veterans very much so deserve. They are becoming forgotten, under appreciated and our children are not being taught how valid these Warriors serve our community and what they have sacrificed for us to have freedom. In addition, our local VFW and American Legion members are decreasing.

This walk and 5K is a fun way to bring awareness to the situation and encourage new members to join the VFW and the American Legion. These memberships go so much further than what I believe our community thinks. They support a lot of charities, clubs, activities, and most importantly, Henderson County.

Race participants $25
