Glass, Metal, & Clay Day

For over 20 years, the Asheville community has celebrated the oldest craft mediums on the Blue Ridge Parkway’s Folk Art Center with members of the Southern Highland Craft Guild. For the first time, the Guild will combine Glass & Metal Day with Clay Day this year to host Glass, Metal, and Clay Day on April 6th! Showcasing the elements, Guild members will demonstrate a range of techniques, and have hands-on activities for children and adults.

Demonstrations include:
blacksmithing, glass blowing, piercing and soldering metals, knife making, bezeling, repoussé, copper etching, assembling stained glass, forging, wheel-thrown and hand-built ceramics, and surface design on clay, among other techniques.

While at the Folk Art Center, visitors have the opportunity to visit America’s oldest craft shop Allanstand (est. 1893), the Eastern National bookstore and Blue Ridge Parkway information desk, as well as three exhibition galleries, and a craft library.
Outside the Folk Art Center, there are hiking trails, picnic tables, grassy areas for a picnic, and free parking.

Bring the whole family and enjoy a day to remember!

Admission is free.

Billy Jonas Band “Welcome Spring” Family Concert (ALL AGES)

Fun for All Ages! Bring the family, and welcome spring at an afternoon show.

The Billy Jonas Band loves to engage and delight both young and adult audiences. Whether performing for adults, families, school groups, faith communities, or a mix, they strive for a musical excellence that inspires, entertains, and moves people literally and figuratively. With “wild-winded word magic” (Dirty Linen Magazine), homemade “industrial re-percussion” instruments, exquisite 3 and 4-part vocal harmonies, plus guitar and bass, they love to create community through song and story. Their specialty: finding and pushing your “wonder” button.

In 2010, the Billy Jonas Band was honored with a performance at the White House!

Robert Beatty Book Event & Serafina Dark Forest Ice Cream Release

Join Serafina author Robert Beatty and his family to celebrate the return of Serafina Dark Forest Ice Cream at The Hop (640 Merrimon Ave) Sunday, April 14th from 1-3pm. In addition to eating lots of ice cream and drinking bubble tea from The Pop, Robert will be signing Serafina and Willa books, answering questions, and talking to fans about his upcoming book SYLVIA DOE AND THE 100-YEAR FLOOD! Malaprops Bookstore will be on hand, selling copies of all his books, and taking special preorders of SYLVIA DOE.

Serafina Dark Forest Ice Cream also returns to all locations of The Hop Ice Cream on 4/14! Serafina Dark Forest is a dark cherry ice cream swirled with Hop-made cherry preserves, flecked chocolate, and whipped cream. This flavor was created for the four books in the Serafina Series. It’s modeled after a black forest cake. Serafina spends a great deal of time in the dark forests surrounding the Biltmore Estate in the books.

This flavor will remain on the menu through the month of April. To learn more about all of the amazing books by Robert Beatty visit

Earth Day Family Fair + Pollinator Garden Planting

Buncombe County Parks & Recreation is offering a wonderful way to celebrate Earth Day. They will be launching the first phase of creating a vibrant pollinator garden in partnership with U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, where community members, students, schools, clubs, organizations, and businesses can volunteer. There will also be an Earth Day Fair that will feature educational family-friendly workshops, eco-crafts (bird feeders, birdhouses, and more), and activities.

Pollinator gardens play a crucial role in supporting local ecosystems by providing habitats and food sources for essential pollinators like bees and butterflies. Creating this garden under the expert guidance of a biologist from U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service will help enhance local biodiversity and promote sustainable land management practices.

Additional landscaping opportunities will be available at Lake Julian Park (37 Lake Julian Road).
