Pollinator Month: After School Program “Bugs and Dust” (all ages)

April is Pollinator Month at the Weaverville Library!  Join us for a variety of kids, teen and adult programs celebrating all things Pollinator in partnership with the Town of Weaverville’s Community Pollinator Initiative.

Friday, April 22nd at 4pm – Kids, Teens, Adults and Families:  Join us for the incredible nature film “Wings of Life”:  Beautiful colors and landscapes backdrop the world of flowers and how they are pollinated across the world, from deserts to lush grassy areas.  Narrated by Meryl Streep

Saturday, April 23rd at 2pm – Dr. Art Hulse will talk about “Landscaping for Pollinators.” Art is a retired university biologist and has extensive experience with native plants landscaping and control of invasive exotic plants. He will emphasize why native plants are best for pollinating insects and provide specific guidance on how to design a pollinator-friendly landscape.

Wednesday, April 27th at 4pm – After School Program “Bugs and Dust” with UNC-A Biology professor Becca Hale – Let’s meet a group of real bugs and learn what they pollinate and why.  For kids of all ages, the program will also include planting of wildflowers to take home and a tour of the pollinator garden at the Main Street Nature Park.

‘Preschoolers We Love You!’ variety show (18mos-5yrs)

Preschoolers, Get Ready!  This year’s “Preschoolers We Love You!” show promises to be one of the silliest ever.  This popular variety show for children began as a special valentine to the library’s youngest book lovers and continues to be one of our most favorite events.  Each year, shows regularly draw over 1,000 children for the multiple performances. The program is a book inspired musical revue especially designed for preschoolers, with puppets, dancing and other lighthearted fun.  The talented performers are drawn from the library staff across the county.

The dates and locations for this year’s performances are:

  • Tuesday, April 9 at Pack Memorial Library; Shows at 9:30 and 10:45
  • Wednesday, April 10 at the Weaverville United Methodist Fellowship Center ; Shows at 9:30 and 10:45
  • Thursday, April 11 at the Black Mountain United Methodist Church; Shows at 9:30 and 10:45

All shows are free, but space is limited. All school groups wanting to attend must call 250-4729 to make a reservation.

Harry Potter Craft Night (all ages)

Asheville Harry Potter Alliance is celebrating World Book Night by hosting a free Harry Potter craft night! Crafts will include painting your own wand, making buttons out of unusable Harry Potter books, and learning to make Harry Potter origami and bookmarks!

Fun for all ages–kids and/or adults!

World Book Night was established in the United Kingdom by The Reading Agency in 2011. This worldwide event celebrates the importance of books, reading, and literacy. It takes place on April 23rd every year.

The Asheville Harry Potter Alliance is participating in Accio Books, the HPA’s annual book drive. Bringing a book to donate at this event is encouraged! Books collected during this event will be donated to The POP Project, a local organization that gives books to communities in need of them, and to HPA Masaka, a chapter in Uganda, Africa that is building a school and in the process of collecting enough books to stock a library. This event is open to all ages.
